At the present count, five World records and another three World Junior records have been set since the beginning of the current outdoor season.

On the track, in the field and on the road (running and race walking), the Olympic summer of 2004 has begun with a World record blitz which has seldom if ever been seen before in the history of Athletics.

All marks with the exception of Usain Bolt’s World Junior 200m mark which has already passed officially into the record books, are still undergoing the usual ratification process, and so it seems an appropriate moment to summarise what is required for a World record to be ratified.

Here are the six general IAAF requirements for a World record:

• Eligible athlete competing under IAAF Rules
• Full range Doping control (including EPO testing for middle and long distances, race walking, 400m, 400m Hurdles and combined events)
• Complete results and programme of the competition
• Additional information depending on the record (date of birth, certified implement, wind reading, proper timing, photo finish...)
• Signature of the judges and recommendation by the relevant Member Federation
• Certified track, implement or road course
