Japan’s Takayuki Matsumiya, a team mate of twotime Kenyan Olympic medallist Eric Wainaina, improved his own World 30km record over an out and back course in Kumamoto, Japan (today, Sun 27) to 1:28:00.

The previous record, 1:28:36, was set on the same course on 16 February 2003.

Matsumiya, who just turned 25 years old on 21 February 2005 had a brilliant 2003 season, when he set personal best at both the 10,000m (27:50.97) and the Half Marathon (1:01:34) in addition to the World 30Km record.

However, he last year failed to make the Olympic 10,000m team, and is now shooting for a 10,000m team spot for the World Championships this summer in Helsinki.

His twin brother Yuko Matsumiya is running the Lake Biwa Marathon next Sunday hoping to make the Marathon team for Helsinki.
