Australia's 1998 World Junior Championships team has received two new members following the World Junior Pre-Departure meet in Sydney over the weekend.

Queensland's Rhys Jones and Victorian Aaron Hartney both threw personal bests and World Junior qualifiers in the shot put to take the total members of Australia's World Junior team to 56.

Jones won the competition with a 16.53m effort, an improvement of nearly a metre on his previous best set at the Optus Nationals in March. Hartney threw 16.19 metres, bettering his old mark of 16.16 metres.

In other results from Sydney on the weekend, Matt Shirvington won the men's 100m in a hand timed 10.4 seconds but was defeated in the 200m by World Junior team member Scott Thom.

Melinda Gainsford-Taylor also won the 100m in a hand timed 11.5 seconds before completing the sprint double with a 22.9 seconds effort in the 200m.
