Brno, Czech Republic - Throwers produced the best results at the Czech national championships over the weekend (2-3) in Brno, the country’s second largest city.

Discus throwers created the headlines in the field events after Saturday’s opening day. Vera Cechlová improved her season’s best to 63.04m, while Jan Marcell threatened his career best with a 65.71m effort. There were also solid throws in the women’s Hammer Throw, won by European U-23 Championships favourite Katerina Šafránková with 66.55. As expected Jaroslav Bába won the High Jump (2.25m), Roman Novotný the Long Jump (7.85m, +1.7), and Jirina Ptácníková prevailed in the Pole Vault (4.20m).

The sprints were hindered by strong tailwinds at the Pod Palackého vrchem stadium. In the 100m, Katerina Cechová won with 11.35, aided by a strong +3.3 m/s wind, while Pavel Maslák took the men’s title with a would-be national record 10.22 (+3.7). The spring hurdlers weren’t happy with the strong winds. Martin Mazác won the 110m Hurdles in 13.62 (+2.9) while Lucie Škrobáková prevailed in 13.10 (+3.0) over Zuzana Hejnová (13.27), the national 400m Hurdles record holder. A national club record came in the 4x100m Relay from Olymp Praha: Mazácová, Táborská, Branišová, Cechová were 0.17 ahead of previous mark clocking 44.61.

Day two wasn’t as windy, but was colder (13 C.) and more wet with heavy showers. Still, a few nice efforts could be seen. Denisa Rosolová, who was third in the100m, defended her title in the 200m posting 23.42 (+1.0 m/s). Silver went to 100m winner Katerina Cechová (23.60). Vojtech Šulc won men’s race in 21.19 (-0.3).

Home star Barbora Špotáková produced an excellent first attempt considering the conditions, reaching 64.65m to take the Javelin Throw title. Her teammate Vítezslav Veselý posted a modest 77.22m in the men’s event, while Petr Frydrych finished only fourth (less than 70 metres) behind youngster Jakub Vadlejch and Jan Syrovátko.

Roman Novotný took his second title after a 15.51m victory in the Triple Jump while the Pole Vault was canceled due to heavy rain without awarding medals.

Elsewhere, Jitka Bartonicková (54.85) and Theodor Jareš (47.38) took victories in the 400m and Tereza Capková and Martin Hošek (1:51.30) in the 800m.
