Brisbane, AustraliaSome of the southern hemisphere’s top field event exponents showed some encouraging earlier new year form in today’s Telstra A-series meeting at the QEII Stadium.

Heading the list was World indoor and outdoor championships fifth placer Justin Anlezark who put 20.79m to win the men’s Shot in fine style. All three of the 26 year-old Commonwealth champion’s valid throws would have been good enough to have won the competition. He began with a 19.66 heave, followed in the second round with a 12.60 put and produced the 20.79 win with his fourth attempt, to beat Scott Martin (19.31m).

In the women’s Discus, 1997 World champion Beatrice Faumuina was a class apart with a 62.93m win, though that was the New Zealander’s only valid throw of the competition.

Having a better series was Area and Commonwealth women’s Hammer record holder (71.12m) Bronwyn Eagles, who had six marked attempts with a best of 66.58, which took the win over Karyne Di Marco (62.93m) and Brooke Krueger (62.45m).

In the men’s Pole Vault, men’s 2001 World champion Dmitri Markov showed a reasonable slice of form, winning with a 5.75m performance.

The track provided a 100m win for Matt Shirvington (10.39) with a second place in the 200m (21.13) for good measure. Casey Vincent with 45.41 run was at the head of a trio of Australians under 46 seconds in the 400m.

In the women’s 200m, Lauren Hewitt recorded a 22.98 win and also took second in the 100m (11.50) behind Gloria Kemasuode 11.44.

World 400 metres Hurdles champion Jana Pittman was a last minute withdrawal pulling out of the meeting as a precautionary measure when feeling a twinge in her knee.
