The final countdown is starting for hundreds of thousands of young
athletics enthusiasts around the world as the 1998 World Athletics Day: Towards
Johannesburg 98 draws closer.
9/10 May 1998 are the dates established by the IAAF for this year's edition of the World Athletics Day, when the vast majority of the 209 member federations of the IAAF will be organising special competitions for their youngsters. The names of 12 winners (6 boys and 6 girls) from each country will then go into a draw which will select 24 lucky youngsters (2 boys and 2 girls from each of the IAAF Continental Areas) who will be invited by the IAAF on a n expenses paid trip to attend the IAAF World Cup in Athletics in Johannesburg on 11-13 September this year.
This year's event repeats the successful formula established in 1996 with "Towards Atlanta 96", when the youngsters were invited to watch the athletics competitions of the Atlanta Olympic Games, and continued in 1997 with "Towards Athens 97", which took the winners to the 6th IAAF World Championships in Athletics.
In Athens, the youngsters not only were able to watch all of the events, but were also invited to meet with some of the stars they dream of emulating later in life.
