Derartu Tulu, the Ethiopian who won the womens race in Turin last year, is unable to
defend her title due to a knee injury she first experienced last May. Tulu, World Cross
Country Champion in both 1995 and 1997, is suffering from a displaced knee tendon. She has
not raced since last autumn but is hoping to recover without the need for surgery, just as
she did in 1993/94 when injured in the wake of her Barcelona Olympic 10,000m gold. Tulu is
currently based in Addis Ababa.
