UK Athletics (UKA) has established a new development programme in an attempt to continue improving the experience that young people receive in Athletics across Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

The UKA, looking to the future, has launched a new development programme called UKA’s Youth Advisory Group (YAG). It has been established as a way to be more closely connected to the youth’s interests, behavioural patterns and obstacles. The goal is to continuously improve their experience in and around athletics by understanding what the younger generation feels and looks for in regards to the sport.

The group has been formed only recently and has met for the first time in February 2011 to discuss their identity, set targets and determine potential projects for the year ahead. As it grows closer to the youth, the UKA is prepared to shape future directions of the sport according to how youngsters view and practice Athletics.

Initially, the YAG will work closely with UKA staff to provide guidance on projects across different sectors. In the long run, it is an initiative that empowers the UKA to better understand its youth operational framework and hence be able to provide the most appropriate services to youngsters in the United Kingdom. It is an investment in the future, as it shows UKA’s disposition to answer the youth’s needs now for a more promising future in the years to come.

The creation of such advisory group is well in line with IAAF’s Athletics World Plan as it aims ultimately to provide people with the greatest opportunities to participate in Athletics. By understanding and better serving UK’s youth, the UKA looks beyond the 2012 Olympics and sets the foundations for a sustainable national youth development programme in Athletics.
