A week before the 41st South American Championships, Brazil held its traditional “Troféu Brasil”, where the best athlete of the continent, Maurren Maggi, produced a 6.75 Long Jump to take the national title.

The 21st edition of the “Troféu”, the National Club’s Championship, which also serves as the Brazilian National Championships, took place in São Paulo for the first time since 1991. For this purpose, the track of the “Estádio Ícaro de Castro Mello”, located at the Ibirapuera Park, was rebuilt, to become the first track in South America certified as “Class 1” by the IAAF.

The competition started on Thursday and ended on Sunday. Maggi, coming from a solid competitive trip in Europe only took part in the Long Jump on Sunday, were she leaped to 6.75 meters twice, in the 3rd (-0.1) and 6th (1.4) rounds. Keila da Silva Costa, bronze medallist at the past World Junior Championships in Kingston in Triple Jump, was second with a personal best of 6.52m.

It was also a weekend for the ’veterans’ who produced some remarkable results.

Édson Luciano Ribeiro (30 years old) took the title in the 100 metres with 10.20, therefore qualifying to the World Championships. André Domingos da Silva (30 years old) won the 200 metres in 20.56, and achieved the qualification standard to compete in the Pan American Games.

Osmar Barbosa dos Santos (34 years-old) won the 800 metres in 1:45.94 (1:45.35 in heats) and also qualified for the Pan-Am Games and the World Championships.

Eronilde Nunes de Araújo (32 years old) was the winner of the 400m Hurdles for his 13th time in the history of the event with a time of 49.40, 20/100 of second shy of the qualifying mark for the Pan-Am Games. “I needed to come back with a strong mark like this. Now, I’ll try to qualify for the Pan-Am Games, but if I don’t make it, I won’t have any reasons to complaint. I’ve done a lot, and I still believe I can do more”. De Araújo has won 3 Pan American titles (91, 95, 99), and is one of the two Brazilian athletes to do so. The other one, the late Adhemar Ferreira da Silva in the Triple Jump.

In the High Jump, Jessé Farias de Lima and Fabrício de Azevedo Romero cleared both 2.27m, equaling the National Record set last year by de Lima.

Jadel Gregório won the Triple Jump with 17.05m (1.0), ahead of another veteran, 33 year-old Anísio Silva (17.00/4.1).

Luiz Fernando da Silva took the title in the Javelin with 77.16m. In second place finished Júlio César de Oliveira (b. 4.2.86) with 72.52, a new national junior record. De Oliveira is one of Brazil’s main hopes for the upcoming World Youth Championships, and recently won the South American Junior title in Guayaquil.

Brazil is always very strong in the relays, and they both produced good performances. Both were won by teams of Unoeste/Brasil Telecom.

The 4x100 (Édson Ribeiro, André da Silva, Claudinei da Silva and Fábio da Silva) was won in a championship record of 38.77, and the 4x400 (Anderson J. da Silva, Eronilde de Araújo, João Carlos dos Santos and Claudinei da Silva) taken in 3:05.45.

In the 20,000m Walk, Sérgio Galdino won his 11th title at the event, by clocking 1:23:51.9.

On the women’s side, Geisa Coutinho also had a remarkable victory in the 400 metres, with 51.55, but she hasn’t yet achieved the qualification standards neither for the Pan-American Games (51.37), nor for the World Championships (51.30).

Lucimar Teodoro won the 400 metres Hurdles with a clocking of 56.28, a championship record, Karla da Silva took the Pole Vault with 4.02m, a new Brazilian and South American Junior record, and Elisângela Adriano recorded one of the three double victories of the event, by taking the Shot and Discus.

Adriano is one of the only 8 Brazilian athletes who, thus far, have achieved the qualification for the World Championships, and took the titles in the Shot with 18.56m, and the Discus with 58.97m.

The women’s relays also produced 2 championship records. The 4x100 was won by BM&F (Lucimar de Moura, Kátia Santos, Thatiana Ignácio and Rosemar Neto) in 44.23, while the 4x400 was taken by Unoeste-Brasil Telecom (Aretusa Moreira, Lucimar Teodoro, Josiane Tito and Luciana França) in 3:31.37.

The Brazilian team for the South American Championships, composed by 41 men and 39 women left for Venezuela on Tuesday, hoping to retain the title they have won since 1974.
