Becky Breisch of the University of Nebraska won the discus at the 97th Drake Relays on a cool (14C), windy day that saw her throw past 60m three times. Her winning throw was 61.71m, just off her year's best of 62.55 of two weeks ago. Her only competition was her Nebraska teammate, Dace Ruskule, who threw 58.15.

Most of the day's competition was taken up with qualifying races, but other noteworthy performances were turned in by Miguel Pate, who long jumped 8.01 and retired after three attempts, and NCAA indoor mile champion Christian Smith of Kansas State, whose 1:47.3 anchor leg in the 4x800 was the fastest split of the day.

Rain is predicted for Saturday's main programme.
