While Teferi Wodajo clocked 2:11:18 hours and was ahead of Benjamin Itok (Kenya / 2:12:08) and Francis Kiprop (Kenya / 2:13:00) Luminita Zaituc took the women’s race in 2:28:24. Second woman was Sun Weiwei (China/2:29:39), Elena Tikhonova (Russia) finished third in 2:45:54.

A record number of 26,000 runners participated in various races in Cologne. Besides around 13,500 marathon runners almost 6,000 athletes participated in the new half marathon.

Half Marathon

There was a German duel in the women’s Half Marathon race between Sabrina Mockenhaupt and Irina Mikitenko.

It was Mikitenko who broke away, increasing the pace again and again, finally winning in 70:03, with Mockenhaupt second in 70:29. It was successful revenge for Irina Mikitenko, who had been angry about Mockenhaupt’s tactics during the 10,000m European final in Gothenburg this August. For 9,850 metres Mikitenko had paced Mockenhaupt. Then she was passed by her on the last 150 metres in a battle for eighth place. There were no elite men in the Cologne Half Marathon.

Munich Marathon

10,400 runners participated in various events at the Munich Marathon on the same day, finishing in the Olympic Stadium. German Championships were included in this event though not a single leading national runner had entered. Matthias Körner won the title with 2:21:55 while Carmen Siewert won the women’s race in 2:47:22.
