Germany’s Grit Breuer stamped her authority on the semi-finals of the 400m, dominating the first heat to beat Falilat Ogunkoya – 50.88 to 51.44. But defending champion Jearl Miles-Clark was even faster with 50.88 – and was pushed hard to the line by Mexico’s Ana Guevara who clocked a national record of 50.93. To qualify as fastest losers, Olympic 400m hurdles champion Deon Hemmings needed to run a national record of 51.47 and her countrywomen Sandie Richards needed to run a season’s best 51.54.
