Women’s 60m heats

It was not Olympic 100m champion Gail Devers but Ekaterina Thanou and Philomena Mensah who provided the biggest surprises in qualifying heats, running 7.01 and 7.03 respectively for new national records. Reacting best to the gun, Thanou accelerated smoothly into a decisive lead. She crossed the line to improve her best by 13 100ths of a second – a considerable margin. Devers, content to cruise through in second place, was visibly surprised when the time flashed up. Mensah improved her record by three 100ths of a second ahead of Nigeria’s Joan Ekah Uduak – who clocked 7.10 – which is a new world junior best.
