Ludmila Formanova (CZE) logro el triunfo de forma
sorprendente ante las favoritas Mutola (MOZ) y Masterkova (RUS), segunda y tercera
clasificadas. De esta forma logra el trono mundial en pista cubierta y al aire libre, en
ambos casos por delante de Mutola. La carrera fue muy rapida. La primera atleta en tomar
la calle libre fue la americana Miles-Clark mientras que las favoritas estaban en las
ultimas posiciones controlandose. El paso de los 400 metros fue de 57.63. En ese momento
Mutola y Masterkova subieron a los puestos de cabeza para pasar el 600 en los 1:27.45. La
entrada en la ultima recta fue emocionante. Mutola iba en cabeza aguantando el ataque de
