Women Heptathlon Event 5Long Jump
Carolina Kluft started her competition this afternoon after the four events of yesterday, with 3850 points, 2615 points short of a new World Junior record.
Sybille Thiele of the GDR set the existing record of 6465 points back in 1983.
The Swede continued her assault on the record as she cleared 6.19 metres in the long jump for 908 points with her third attempt, after opening with 5.94 metres and then fouling her second jump; and a total after 5 events of 4758, leaving 1707 points to a new record.
At this stage, Kluft is behind Thiele’s 5 event total, as the East German cleared a a massive 6.65 metres in the long jump, however, we can look forward to strong performances in both the Javelin and 800 metres, which will certainly put her in sight of the record. Kluft would need to throw around the 50 metre mark in the javelin to contrast the 36.22 in Thiele's record series, requiring a massive personal best from the Swede.
Kluft currently leads Olga Alekseyeva from Kazakhstan, who was the next best performer in this event with a 6.01 metres for 853 points and a five event total of 4275 points. Olga Levenkova (RUS) in 3rd position 4198 points at this stage after jumping 5.81 metres (792 points).
Over a hundred points back in fourth place is France’s Amandine Constantin with 4088 points, with 816 points earned from her 5.89 metre effort in the long jump pit.
