Event 2 HIGH JUMP

The pentathlete with the best high jump credentials--Liga Klavina of Latvia--did nothing to disrupt the form chart as her 1.89 leap easily bettered the other competitors. It also catapulted her into the top position in the heptathlon with 2106 points after two events.

Klavina, after passing the first three heights, proceeded to post an error-free series through 1.86, at which point all other competitors had been eliminated. Only her 1.89 required a second attempt.

Natalya Sazanovich, the leader after the first event, found herself 55 points off the pace in second place after her 1.80 best, the same height achieved by Sabine Braun in third at 2035.

Braun's teammate, Karin Ertl, used a 1.83 performance to move within four points of a medal position at 2031 points.
