As she sailed off the turn, there was little doubt that Sanya Richards would dominate the proceedings in the 200 metres. Less than 24 hours after winning the 400 with a sensational 48.70 Area record, the 21-year-old took home the top honours for the U.S. over the half lap as well in 22.23.
Her dominating double at Olympic Stadium put her in fine company: only 400m World record holder Marita Koch has ever produced such a double at the World Cup, and her’s was achieved 21 years ago.
Belgium’s European champion Kim Gevaert, running just to the outside of Richards in lane six, came home in second in 22.72, collecting eight pivotal points for Europe in the hot three-way battle for team honours. Ghanaian Vida Anim, third in yesterday’s 100, finished third for Africa in the longer dash as well with a personal best 22.81.
