| German Anja Rucker was the fastest in the first round of the women's 400 metres. Competing in heat 7, Rucker ran 51.09, and advanced to the quarter finals. 1999 world leader, Nigerian Falilat Ogunkoya, won the fourth heat in 51.43, while defending world champion, Australian Cathy Freeman took the sixth heat in 51.49. 1999 world indoor champion, German Grit Breuer was victorious in the first heat (51.13), while American Maicel Malone-Wallace won the second (also 51.13). The other winners were Charity Opara (NGR) in heat 3 with 51.42 and Katharine Merry (GBR) in heat 5 with 51.48. None of the possible contenders to the final failed to advance to the next round. |

clasificacion para los cuartos de final. La lider del ranking de la temporada, la
nigeriana Falilat Ogunkoya, vencio en la cuarta serie en 51.43, mientras que la atleta que
defiende el titulo, la australiana Cathy Freeman vencia en la sexta serie con 51.49. La
alemana Grit Breuer, campeona mundial este invierno en Maebashi, consiguio la victoria en
