Women's Pole Vault

Perhaps the biggest shock of the first day of the 9th IAAF World Cup in Athletics, well at the very least in terms of the field events, was Annika Becker of Germany’s defeat of Russia’s European champion and continental record holder Svetlana Feofanova in the women's Pole Vault.

Becker had briefly taken Feofanova’s European record for nine days this summer with 4.77m, a mark which still stands as her German national record.

With both women clearing 4.40m on their second attempts, they passed on to 4.50m, where on her third attempt Becker scrapped the height, while Feofanova also having failed her first two attempts, moved on to 4.50 and failed with her final effort.

Becker consolidated a very good competition with a first time success at 4.55.

Both jumpers were in brilliant form considering how wet the runway was throughout the event and the light rain, which was constantly falling as they jumped.

Spain’s Dana Cervantes and Asian record holder Shuying Gao of China both were successful at 4.30 but didn’t progress any further. Third place going to the surprising Spanish record holder, who has a best of 4.36m, on count back.
