The World Junior leader, former World Youth champion and outright favourite Dailenys Alcantara became the first woman ever to win back to back World Junior titles tonight in Moncton, the Cuban champion needing “only” 14.09 to secure the gold medal.

Two years ago in Bydgoszcz, she had jumped 15 centimetres further; tonight there was virtually challenge and the crowd were treated to that one single effort beyond the 14 metres line.

In fact, Alcantara’s domination was such that she could have won the gold with five of her six attempts tonight. The 19-year-old opened with 13.76 before improving to 13.81 and hopping, stepping and jumping to her winning 14.09 in the third round.

China’s Lina Deng was the first jumper to come anywhere near the Cuban her second effort a personal best 13.72, a mark which will eventually earn her the bronze medal.

The major surprise came from Great Britain’s Laura Samuel who improved her personal best by 20 centimetres in round four and landed a new national junior record 13.75 worth a superb silver medal.

There would be no other spark in the final two rounds expect that is Valeria Kanatova’s last effort which was measured at 13.68, the Uzbekistan’s coming close to a medal but not there just yet.
