World and Olympic silver medallist on verge of retirement

Szekely has still not decided whether to officially retire from competitive athletics, despite being dogged by illness and injury over the past two years.

Beclea-Szekely, who claimed a silvers medals in the 1500 metres at the 2000 Sydney Olympics and 2001 World Championships in Edmonton, was diagnosed with hepatitis B in July 2002.

However she is still waiting to see if she is successful in her bid to become the Romanian Olympic Committee's vice-president, before coming to a decision about her future.

“I have not decided yet,” she said. “I am waiting for the Romanian Olympic Committee elections (on November 15) where I am standing for the post of Vice-President. I will decide what I am going to do with athletics after this result.”

“I have dedicated the last two years completely to my family. For many years I deprived them of my presence, because of training and contests. Anyway, now I am more relaxed and more rested.”
