European Athletics has awarded the 2014 European Athletics Championships to the Swiss city of Zürich.
The European Athletics Council made the unanimous decision Saturday morning after the Swiss athletics federation and city of Zürich presented their candidacy to host the 22nd edition of the event.
Zürich will be the second Swiss city to hold European Athletics' flagship event after country capital Bern hosted the fifth edition of the championships in 1954.
European Athletics President Hansjörg Wirz, who is Swiss, said, "We are very pleased to confirm that Zürich will be the hosts of the European Athletics Championships in 2014.
"Athletics is a hugely popular sport in Switzerland and we have been assured today that we can look forward to a fantastic event."
Patrick K. Magyar, CEO of the newly incorporated "Leichtathletik EM 2014 AG" that will oversee the championships and Weltklasse Zürich Meeting Director, said, "Together with Athletissima Lausanne, we will be able to benefit from a thorough know-how in the realisation of international meetings."
Weltklasse Zürich and Athletissima Lausanne are two stops on the IAAF Diamond League circuit.
"Even though one-day events cannot be compared with the dimension of championships, we trust that our experience will be a valuable asset. And we know that the commitment and support of the Swiss athletics fans will help tremendously," said Magyar.
A number of Swiss and international media representatives were on hand to report on the historic decision made at the 125th European Athletics Council meeting at the Hotel La Barcarolle on the banks of Lake Geneva in Prangins, Switzerland.
Zürich was the outstanding candidate among a number of interested cities to organise the premier continental athletics championships as it continues its two-year cycle in 2014.
Throughout the bidding process, the future organisers of the championships received a lot of support from both the Canton and the city of Zurich.
The 2010 European Athletics Championships will take place in Barcelona through 26 July to 1 August. The 2012 championships are scheduled for Helsinki, Finland, through 27 June to 1 July.

L'Association Européenne d'Athlétisme (AEA) a désigné la ville suisse de Zurich pour organiser les Championnats d'Europe d'athlétisme 2014.
Le Conseil de l'AEA a pris sa décision à l'unanimité ce samedi matin après que Swiss Athletics (la fédération suisse d'athlétisme) et la ville de Zurich aient présenté leur candidature pour accueillir la 22e édition de la manifestation.
Zurich deviendra ainsi la seconde ville helvète à accueillir la compétition phare de l'AEA après Berne, la capitale de la Suisse, qui a organisé la cinquième édition de ces championnats, en 1954.
Le président de l'AEA, Hansjörg Wirz, Suisse lui-même, a déclaré: "Nous sommes ravis de confirmer que Zurich va être la ville hôte des Championnats d'Europe d'athlétisme en 2014.
"L'athlétisme est un sport extrêmement populaire en Suisse, et on nous a démontré aujourd'hui que nous pouvons nous attendre à une compétition fantastique."
Patrick K. Magyar, le Directeur exécutif de Leichtathletik EM 2014 AG, la nouvelle société créée pour préparer et gérer ces championnats, qui est aussi le Directeur de la compétition Weltklasse Zürich, a dit: "En collaboration avec Athletissima Lausanne, nous bénéficions d'un savoir-faire approfondi en matière d'organisation de compétitions internationales."
Les compétitions Weltklasse Zürich et Athletissima Lausanne sont toutes deux des étapes du circuit de la Diamond League de l'IAAF.
"Même si les compétitions d'une journée ne peuvent être comparées, en termes d'échelle, à des championnats de cet ordre, nous ne doutons pas que notre expérience représente un véritable atout. Nous savons, de plus, que l'engagement et le soutien des fans suisses d'athlétisme vont nous être d'une aide immense," a poursuivi M. Magyar.
Plusieurs journalistes suisses et représentants de la presse internationale étaient présents pour entendre l'annonce de cette décision historique, prise dans le cadre du 125e Conseil de l'Association Européenne d'Athlétisme, qui s'est tenu à l'Hôtel La Barcarolle, sur les bords du Lac Léman, dans la ville suisse de Prangins.
Zurich était une candidate exceptionnelle parmi les différentes villes ayant manifesté leur intérêt pour organiser ces championnats continentaux, qui va poursuivre son cycle bisannuel en 2014.
Tant le canton que la ville de Zurich ont totalement soutenu les futurs organisateurs de la manifestation tout au long du processus de candidature.
Les Championnats d'Europe d'athlétisme 2010 se tiendront à Barcelone, en Espagne, du 26 juillet au 1er août. Les Championnats 2012, eux, sont prévus à Helsinki, en Finlande, du 27 juin au 1er juillet.
