NASDAQ closing bell rung to mark the IAAF Centenary

Monaco - Yesterday afternoon (Fri 8) in Times Square, New York City, IAAF President Lamine Diack was given the honour of the traditional ringing of the NASDAQ closing bell, to mark the year of the IAAF Centenary and the work of the International Athletic Foundation of which he is also President.

The closing bell is rung daily at 4:00pm EST to signify the end of trading on the NASDAQ exchange.

"It's an honour to be in New York to celebrate such a special year in the history of the IAAF," said President Diack. "The United States has been at the forefront of our sport and our association’s activities throughout our 100 years of existence."

"The iconic face of the IAAF Centenary is the legendary sprinter and long jumper Jesse Owens, a man who transcended track and field athletics, winning 4 Olympic Gold medals at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin, and setting numerous World records during his career. He also symbolises the huge impact that US track and field athletes have made in what is the most global of sports."

"We thank NASDAQ for this privilege and are most grateful for the support of all our partners who have made this week’s Centenary activities possible in New York - the organisers of the adidas Grand Prix, USA Track & Field, VTB the IAAF Centenary Main Partner, and Supporting Partners adidas and Mondo - and to the athletes here with us today."

NASDAQ, the National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations, began in 1971 as a way to electronically trade more than 5000 stocks, and is today the home to major high tech stocks such as Microsoft, Dell, Apple….

The NASDAQ exchange is located at 43rd and Broadway, with a high-tech electronic display wrapping around its cylindrical HQ building, providing up-to-the-minute financial news, market highlights, advertisements, and broadcasting the daily opening and closing bell ceremonies. This modern day icon of New York City soars 7 stories high and illuminates Times Square 24 hours a day.

Le NASDAQ sonne la cloche pour honorer le Centenaire de l’IAAF

Monaco - Hier après-midi (vendredi 8) le Président de l'IAAF, Lamine Diack, en visite à New-York, a eu l'honneur de faire sonner la traditionnelle cloche de clôture de séance du NASDAQ à Times Square, en hommage à l'année du Centenaire de l'IAAF et au travail de la Fondation Internationale d’Athletisme dont il est également président.

La cloche résonne tous les jours à 16 heures pour signifier la fermeture des transactions du marché boursier électronique NASDAQ.

« C'est un honneur d'être ici, à New-York pour célébrer une année aussi spéciale de l'histoire de l'IAAF » a déclaré le Président Diack. « Les États-Unis ont été à l'avant-garde de l’athlétisme et des activités de notre fédération tout au long de nos 100 ans d'existence. »

« Le visage emblématique du Centenaire de l’IAAF est celui de Jesse Owens, sprinter de légende et sauteur en longueur qui a transcendé l'athlétisme. Owens a remporté 4 médailles d'or aux Jeux Olympiques à Berlin de 1936 et a établi de nombreux records du monde au cours de sa carrière. Il incarne également l'immense contribution des athlètes américains au plus populaire des sports. »

Le marché boursier électronique NASDAQ, (Association nationale des agents de change des cotations automatisées) a vu le jour en 1971 comme moyen d'échange électronique des actions de plus de 5000 sociétés. Il accueille aujourd'hui les principaux titres d’entreprises de haute technologie telles Microsoft, Dell, Apple….

NASDAQ est situé sur la 43ème rue et Broadway. Un immense panneau publicitaire électronique s’enroule autour de la façade de l’immeuble cylindrique de sept étages qui abrite son siège social. Il affiche en temps réel les informations financières, les évènements marquants du marché ainsi que des publicités et diffuse quotidiennement les séances d'ouverture et de clôture. Ce symbole moderne de la ville de New-York illumine Times Square 24h sur 24h.
