Claudio Romero starts as favourite with a best of 63.65m this year and 64.18m in 2016. The young Chilean has already won medals in the South American championships in both the U18 and U20 categories and competed in the World U20 Championships last year.

Anyel Alvarez of Cuba has the second best mark of the entrants with 62.75m, followed by Oleksiy Kiryllin of Ukraine with 62.02m, although neither of them have had the international exposure of Romero.

Another athlete to look out for is this year's U18 Carifta Games champion, Jamaica's Daniel Cope, whose best is 61.25m. The other boys are entered with marks exceeding 60 metres this year: Burak Dertli of Turkey and Jakub Lewoszewski of Poland.
