Cuba has won four of the eight World U18 titles in boys' triple jump thus far, and they will be looking to make it five in Nairobi with the two top entrants in the field.
Jordan A. Diaz has been the best U18 specialist by far this year, reaching at least 16.50m in five competitions. His best came in the national senior championships, where his 16.66m proved good enough for fourth place, while also moving him to fourth on the all-time list in his age category. The World U18 Championships will mark the first occasion that the 16-year-old competes internationally.
Yusniel Jorrin is the only other athlete in the field with a 16-metre jump this year. In addition to his 16.02m best, his consistency has been proven by six more competitions beyond 15.80m, making him the favourite for silver.
Frixon David Chilla of Ecuador looks the best of the rest, with 15.89m this year. He has already competed in two international championships this year, winning the South American junior title and taking seventh place in the continental championships at the senior level.
Completing the favourites list is another South American, Arnovis de Jesus Dalmero of Colombia, whose best of 15.64m came when he placed second behind Chilla in the South American U18 Championships.
