This year’s world leader and national junior record holder Jaheel Hyde, who ran 49.49 on home soil in Kingston back in March, wants to make history and win Jamaica’s first gold in the event, as he did last year by winning the World Youth Championships title in the boy's 110m hurdles.
Still only 17, Hyde is the only man under 50 seconds in the field.
Nevertheless, he could find some strong opposition from US champion Kenny Selmon (50.13), Asian Junior Championships gold medallist Yu Chia-Hsuan (50.49) of Chinese Taipei, his continental runner-up, China’s Wang Guozhong (50.61) and USA’s Khallifah Rosser (50.62).
