After finishing down in eighth place in the 2012 final, Kenya’s Moses Mukono has his experience at this level to fall back on. On paper, he is more than 10 seconds quicker than his nearest rival in Eugene after running 13:19.26 at the IAAF Diamond League meeting in May.

Mukono will be joined on the Kenyan team by the much less experienced Fredrick Kipkosgei, who is still only 17 and who has never raced outside of Kenya before.

Phillip Kipyeko, sixth two years ago, will try to spoil a potential Kenyan party and become the first Ugandan to the take the junior global title in the distance. He is the second fastest man among the entries.
