Kenya's Daisy Jepkemei is the only defending champion in the women’s running events but is far from the favourite this time around, although Kenyan has a winning streak to preserve in this event having won on every occasion since it came onto the Championships programme in 2004.

She actually finished second in the Kenyan trials behind her rapidly improving compatriot Rosefline Chepngetich.

Bahrain's Ruth Jebet leads entrants with the 9:27.90 she ran in Marrakech last month, with Ethiopia's Buzuayehu Mohamed a distant second on the list of entrants at 9:40.26.

Australia’s Kate Spencer and Peru’s Zulema Arenas could also be medal contenders with times of 9:55.13 and 9:55.23 to their credit this summer.
