Ethiopia’s 2013 5000m national champion Senbere Teferi is by far the fastest junior so far this year, with 8:41.54 from a blazing IAAF Diamond League race in Doha, where she placed ninth, while Kenyan trials winner Lilian Kasait Rengeruk ran 8:53.41 in the same race, making her the second-fastest Oregon 2014 entrant at this distance.

It’s unlikely that either will run as fast in Eugene although they should still be medal contenders.

Two non-Africans to watch out for are Poland’s Sofia Ennaoui and USA’s prodigiously talented Mary Cain, who is only 15th on the junior list at this distance in 2014 but was a world 1500m finalist in Moscow last summer.
