Cuba has won more world U20 triple jump titles than any other country; in Bydgoszcz the Caribbean island nation will be looking to add a fourth through world U20 leader Davisleidis Velazco, the only U20 athlete to have jumped beyond the 14-metre mark this season.

The 16-year-old reached 14.08m in Havana in late May, and has also leaped 13.67m and 13.58m, farther than all but two other U20 athletes this year.

Bria Matthews of the US is closest on paper, courtesy of a 13.73m PB in late May which brought her the collegiate Atlantic Coast Conference title. A month later she won the US junior title and last week was 12th at the US Olympic Trials.

The field also includes Georgiana-Iuliana Anitei, Romania’s world U18 champion. The 17-year-old has jumped 13.38m this season, but has personal bests of 13.49m and 13.60m (indoors) from 2015.

Mariya Ovchinnikova of Kazakhstan is also expected to be a factor, with 13.60m and 13.54 leaps to her credit this year.

Others in the hunt include Chen Ting (13.54m), the Chinese junior champion, Ilionis Guillaume of France and USA’s world U18 long jump champion Tara Davis.
