Adam Gemili duly confirmed his preevent favourite status as he won the men’s 100m final in stunning fashion here in Barcelona. In doing so, Gemili brought the world title back to Great Britain in an impressive championships record of 10.05 to better his career best in three hundredths of a second virtually in the absence of wind (0.1m/s).

Backed by a reasonable 0.155 reaction time Gemili shared the early leadership with America’s Tyreek Hill, holder of a powerful kick-off and also the fastest of the blocks tonight (0.143s).

Gemili’s smooth style put him at the front at the 40m mark and from then on the 18-year-old British bullet strengthened his lead to finally build a massive 0.12s advantage over his closest pursuer.

America’s Aaron Ernest – the second fastest junior this season - bounced back from a dreadful start in the second half of the race to become an undisputed second equaling his PB of 10.17 in the process while the intriguing fight for the bronze witnessed the tight success of Jamaica’s Odean Skeen – aided by a 0.118 reaction time – in a PB of 10.28 to pip Hill over the line, the American given 10.29, same time as the second Jamaican Jazeel Murphy.

Overall no less than five athletes managed PBs, the list also including Great Britain’s Chijindu Ujah (10.39) and Portugal’s Carlos Nascimento in seventh (10.41).

Gemili, who has also been selected for the Great Britain team that will compete on home soil at the 2012 Olympic Games in London declared: "I’m speechless. I was really nervous ahead of the final, I never thought that would happen. I have worked very hard with my coach to get here; my friends and family also supported me a lot. The Olympics are a big bonus for a great season."
