Ashton Eaton started his first decathlon in two years in style, winning the fastest of the 100m heats in a 10.23 championships decathlon best, just 0.02 slower than his personal best and world decathlon best of 10.21 from the 2012 US Olympic Trials.

The last decathlon which the 27-year-old completed was in Moscow in 2013, where he won his first world title. 10.23 is also the second-best result of his career, much faster than his previous season’s best of 10.42 from Hengelo in May, although he ran a wind-aided 10.20 earlier this season.

Canada’s Damian Warner also opened strongly, clocking 10.31 for second place. It was a good result for the 25-year-old, because his 10.28 personal best in the Pan American Games decathlon came with a 1.4m/s following wind whereas here he had a slight headwind of -0.4m/s.

Warner is a clear medal favourite here and is joined in the hunt for the top three with USA’s Trey Hardee. The 31-year-old, who won consecutive world titles in 2009 and 2011, ran 10.56; again a good start given that his best this season, 10.48, came with a perfect 2.0m/s wind.

Germany’s Rico Freimuch, seventh at the 2013 World Championships, ran a season’s best of 10.51 in the first event and Brazilian Felipe dos Santos clocked 10.53. Another athlete aiming for the top eight is Germany’s 2013 world silver medallist Michael Schrader, who ran 10.78.

In the second-fastest heat there was a promising start for 2013 fifth-place finisher Eelco Sintnicolaas, who equalled his personal best of 10.62. Ukraine’s Oleksiy Kasyanov ran 10.73 and Cuba’s Yordani Garcia 10.77, both season’s bests.
