Chinese Youth and Junior Champs - Report

The Chinese Youth Championships in Yichun 2629 June did not produce many top results meaning that China leaves for the 6th IAAF World Youth Championships, Südtirol, Bressanone, Italy with only a few real medal prospects as only a handful of Chinese are among the top in the world youth lists for 2009.

Best results in Yichun included 15-year-old Chu Pengfei’s winning mark 13.67sec in the 110m Hurdles. Chu, who will only turn 16 on 28 December, has already run a wind aided 13.33 time in April and a 14.49 personal best over 106.7cm senior hurdles.

In the 400m Hurdles Cheng Wen won in 51.35sec, but the Shandong athlete can run much faster later in Bressanone. His personal best is 51.03 from last season and already has set a personal best 51.21 in the men’s 91.4cm 400m hurdles this season.

In the men’s 100m Zheng Dongsheng surprised favourite Tan Juquan to win in 10.63sec against 10.75 to a headwind. Zheng result was a personal best and he has run a wind aided 10.49 earlier this season with Tan having set a 10.48 wind legal personal best at the National Championships in May. In the 400m Tan Jian was fastest in a 47.45 personal best.

In the field events, 15-year-old Xiao Yangbao won the Triple Jump with a 15.76m personal best and Li Meng topped a high standard shot put tossing a 20.31m personal best. Krzysztof Brzozowski’s (POL) world leading mark 20.32m by a mere centimetre. Another Chinese over 20m line this season, Wang Baolei was second with 19.97m result.

Zhang Menjie won the Discus competition with a 60.09m personal best beating 15-year-old Mo Ke who also achieved PB in second place with 59.52m result.

On the women’s side Hu Yating won a thrilling Long Jump competition where the top three ended up within just one centimetre of each other. Hu set a personal best 6.23m for the win with Zhang Xuejing in second place also with 6.23m PB and Xu Xiaoling third with 6.22m PB. World Youth leading performer Lu Minjia did not compete. Lu jumped 6.43m couple of weeks ago.

In the Triple Jump Deng Linuo won with a season’s best 13.26m ahead of World Youth season leader Wu Zhixia who was second with 13.10m result. Wu jumped 13.29m in April.

In throwing events Weng Chunxia won the Discus with a 51.31m personal best and Zhang Li was best in the Hammer with 60.56m personal best.

JUNIORS

In the National Junior Championships conducted at the same time in Yichun, Tsui Chi Hoo from Hongkong won a fast men’s 100m in a 10.39sec personal best with Chen Qiang clocking the same time 10.39, also a PB. Xie Wenjun, who already has a personal best 13.47s over 106.7cm senior hurdles, was fastest in 110m hurdles in 13.81.

2007 World Youth champion Wang Chen won with 2.20m in the High Jump and the second best junior in the world this season, Cao Shuo, won the Triple Jump easily with 16.24m result.

In the women’s 400m Zhao Yanmin set a fast personal best 52.97s for the win with Chen Lin clocking 53.43 season’s best for the second place. Li Yanmei won the Triple Jump with 13.66m result and Meng Qianqian topped the Shot Put with 17.19m.

A 60 metre discus thrower this season, Yang Yanbo won the event with a 54.54m throw this time and Yang Qi was fastest over the 400m hurdles in 57.54s missing her personal best set in June by only 0.03 seconds.
