Daniel Stahl produced the farthest discus throw in the world for four years, winning at the Folksam Grand Prix in Sollentuna with a Swedish record of 71.29m on Thursday (29).

The 24-year-old, who finished fifth at the IAAF World Championships Beijing 2015, opened his series with a lifetime best of 68.88m, equalling the world lead set by Jamaica’s Fedrick Dacres back in February.

After a foul in the second round, he sent his disc well beyond the 70-metre line. When his distance of 71.29m flashed up on the scoreboard, he sprinted down the infield in celebration and embraced one of the officials.

Not only did it add three centimetres to the Swedish record set in 1984 by Ricky Bruch, it also elevates Stahl to ninth on the world all-time list.

Following the excitement of his record-breaking throw, Stahl recorded two fouls before ending his series with 62.83m.

“I had been focusing on throwing 70 metres this year and thought that Ricky’s record would be a goal for the future,” said a delighted Stahl. “But it has already happened! It’s fantastic!”

World bronze medallist Robert Urbanek of Poland finished second with a season’s best of 66.73m, the second-best mark of his career.
