April Williams came through to take gold with a late charge with a new world-leading time of 13.23.

Starting in lane three, the American was level with compatriot Theresa Lewis, in lane five, for the first two thirds of the race.

However, as Lewis was passed by Jamaica’s Natasha Ruddock, the quickest in the field before the race, Williams accelerated for victory. Her time, aided by a wind of 1.1mps was 0.15 seconds outside the world youth best.

Ruddock was second in 13.38 and Lewis, third, in 13.39. Sweden’s Emilia Rundqvist (13.51) and Croatia’s Arna Erega (13.52) also set personal bests.
