old Eliud Kipchoge of Kenya who will always be remembered as the man who prevented both Hicham El Guerrouj and Kenenisa Bekele from winning the 5000m final at the World Championships in Paris scored yet another victory in today’s 5000m race in 13:23.34.

Kipchoge outsprinted his compatriot Richard Limo (13:23.95) and Ethiopian Gebre-egziab Gebremariam (13:24.13) in what was, as expected, a tactically slow race.

Of the 10-man field, nine African runners (6 Kenyans and 3 Ethiopians) and one Qatari representative, it was Nicholas Kemboi who led the pack through the first kilometre in 2:46.60.

Kipchoge was in the lead as the field went through the 3000 metres point mark, reached in 8:13.12, but waited until reaching the bell to place his devastating finishing kick.

“I feel very good because I won the World Championships and today I won the World Athletics Final, sais Kipchoge this afternoon.

“This is good for me. This proves I am the real World Champion because many people say I won by chance, but it’s not by chance.”

Before upsetting middle distance legends El Guerrouj and Bekele in Paris, Kipchoge won the Junior race at the World Cross Country championships this winter and set a new World Junior record of 12:52.61 in Oslo Golden League.
