Turkey’s Surreya Ayhan turned this into a onewoman race as she shot into the lead at the gun and led the race from start to finish, finishing more than twenty metres and nearly 4 seconds ahead of Kenya’s Jackline Maranga in second place.

The only competition here was for the lower steps of the podium and that contest was won by Maranga, who was the front runner in the pack following far behind Ayhan. She crossed the line in 4:01.48, just outkicking Great Britain’s Hayley Tullett with 4:01.60. Tullett’s compatriot Joanne Pavey ran a new PB of 4:01.79 to take fourth place.

Ayhan was timed at 1:02.14 for the first 400m, 1:03.97 for the second 400 (2:06.11), 1:03.83 for the third lap (3:09.94 at 1200m) and crossed the line in 3:57.72 never having had any pressure from behind.

A delighted Ayhan said: "Eevrybody saw who the real World Champion is now.

"Everybody saw what Tomashova did today. She did not even come near me. I will prepare for the Olympics and it will be very different from Paris.

"I will leave them far behind me again."
