Mexico’s Ana Guevara who became the 8th fastest woman in the history of the 400 metres when winning her first global title two weeks ago in Paris in 48.89 scored another superb victory here in Monaco as she equalled the third fastest time of the year (49.34).

Jamaica’s Lorraine Fenton who was second to Guevara in Paris World Championships had to content with yet another second place as she couldn’t do better than 50.29 this afternoon.

A World Championships finalist, Tonique Williams of the Bahamas finally made it to the podium as she finished third in 50.87 here in the Louis II stadium 19 hundredths of a second ahead of former world champion Amy Mbacke Thiam of Senegal.

Just like fellow Pan Am champion Felix Sanchez, Guevara was the fastest out the blocks and well clear of the rest of the field as she reached the 200 metre mark.
Undefeated since Edmonton’s final, Guevara proved yet again she is the present and the future of the discipline.

“I am very happy to finish the season this way, said Guevara after her race. I never get into the starting blocks thinking I’m going to lose but anything can happen.

“I have a lot of motivation for next year’s Olympics and then my plan is to move to 800m.”

Fifth in the IAAF overall Rankings before her race, Guevara was a finalist of the Athlete of the year Award already in 2002 – with Paula Radcliffe and Marion Jones.

A Golden League Jackpot winner last year, the 26-year-old Sonora based athlete has taken athletics into a new dimension in Mexico. For the first time ever an international athletics meeting was organised in Mexico City last May and no less than 55,000 Mexican fans gathered in the Olympic stadium to support their national heroine.
