It was 'easy does it' for the main medal contenders in the opening exchanges of the women's 100m heats.

Inside an Olympic Stadium in which temperatures nudged 27c the fastest qualifier was US champion Carmelita Jeter in 11.22, who comfortably took heat three ahead of Virgil Hodge of St Kitts and Nevis (11.47). 

In heat one Brazilian Lucimar Aparecida De Moura shaded Olympic 100m champion Shelly-Ann Fraser in a photo-finish. Both athletes recording the same time of 11.41.
 
World No.1 Kerron Stewart had one or two injury concerns coming into the championships but the Olympic silver medallist, let out a wink to the camera after easing to victory in heat two in 11.32 from Vida Anim (11.38).

Heat four lifted the enthusiasm of the crowd as German, Verena Sailer comfortably qualified in 11.29. However, she had to settle for second behind the vastly experienced Bahamian Debbie Ferguson-McKenzie, who ran a controlled 11.26. 

Jamaica's Aleen Bailey registered 11.29 running into a 0.7m/s headwind from Russia's Evgeniya Polyakova (11.41) in a predictable outcome heat five.

Defending World champion Veronica Campbell-Brown of Jamaica edged a tight heat six in 11.35 - 0.01 ahead of Noway's Ezinne Okparaebo and Trinidad's Semoy Hackett.

The 2005 World champion Lauryn Williams of the USA took heat seven in 11.36 - 0.03 clear of World Indoor 60m bronze medallist Tahesia Harrigan of the British Virgin Islands in heat seven.

Bahamian veteran Chandra Sturrup took heat eight in 11.28 from Russian Anna Geflikh (11.47). Meanwhile, just for the record Kelly-Ann Baptiste of Trinidad edged the ninth and final heat in 11.42 from US championship runner-up Muna Lee (11.44).
