Czech Vera Pospisilova reaffirmed her number Event status in the IAAF World Ranking with a second round spin of 65.42m to beat the newly crowned World champion Irina Yatchenko of Belarus - who languished down in eighth and last place today (60.96m) - and Paris bronze medallist Ekaterini Voggoli of Greece who was third with 63.55m.

The Greek produced her best throw in the opening round of the competition, and scrapped another 63m effort with her second attempt (63.02m) before throwing 61.54m in round three (fouled final attempt).

The surprise of the afternoon was Pan American Games champion Aretha Hill (USA) who throwing first (after a foul in the first round) produced a 65.10m release in the second round which ultimately took second place, and backed it up with solid 63.03m and 64.53 throws in rounds three and four.

It was a simple competition which took flight at the beginning of round two with Hill’s 65.10m release and was speedily killed off again three throws later when Pospisilova produced her 65.42m best. No one even vaguely approached the 65m barrier again during the afternoon.

As a final footnote, off-form along with Yatchenko was her predecessor as World champion, the 2001 gold medallist Natalya Sadova of Russia who produced a best of 62 metres with her final attempt.
