The fourth and last event of day one brought good news to Briton Jessica Ennis who has been leading the Heptathlon competition from the start. Ennis did extremely well in the Shot Put and finished the day with a season’s best 23.25 200 metres which really gives her confidence for the second day.

Ennis also came close to her 23.15 personal best which she ran in Osaka 2007. The 23-year-old from Sheffield leads the competition with 4124 points after day one. Ennis looks to be headed for a gold medal now and that will only be prevented by a failure in Long Jump or Javelin by the Briton. If she gets near her recent personal bests 6.43m in Long Jump and 46.47m in the Javelin Ennis has a possibility to reach 6900 points in the competition.

Ukrainian Olympic champion Nataliya Dobrynska is still in second place, but her 200m race did not go well. Dobrynska only clocked 25.02 for a total of 3817 points after the first day and is trailing by a massive 307 points off the leader. The other two Ukrainians and German Jennifer Oeser have closed the gap on Dobrynska. The 25-year-old set a personal best 24.30 in the 200m and is only three points behind Dobrynska with 3814p.

Dobrynska’s countrywomen are closing in too. Lyudmyla Yosypenko is in fourth place with 3806 points following a 23.86 performance in 200m and Hanna Melnychenko is right behind with 3796 total points (24.11 200m).  Poland’s Kamila Chudzik is also pushing herself into the medal contention. The Pole is in sixth place with 3770 points and has a strong day two coming tomorrow.

German Julia Mächtig in seventh place with 3758 points is the last athlete who has her eyes on a medal. Nataliya Dobrynska is still the biggest favourite for the silver, but her fate lies mostly in the Long Jump which will decide which way she will be moving on day two.

Oeser, Yosypenko, Melnychenko and Chudzik are extremely even on paper for day two and it will be a fierce fight for the medals during the last three events.
