Unlike the preceding heptathlon discipline, the shot put was relatively uneventful.

Overall leader Nafissatou Thiam produced the best mark of the day to increase her winning margin. Her 15.17m season’s best was just seven centimetres shy of her outdoor PB.

Germany’s Carolin Schafer kept up the pressure, though, and produced a PB of 14.84m to move up from third to second place overall.

Anouk Vetter was almost a metre down on her PB, but a best effort of 15.09m propelled her from ninth up to fourth on the leaderboard, boosting her chances of a medal.

Cuba’s Yorgelis Rodriguez slipped down to third overall after managing 13.45m. Although Katarina Johnson-Thompson also dropped down the standings to 13th, her 12.47m equalled her best ever throw at a major championships and she can look forward to taking big points in the 200m and long jump.

USA’s Sharon Day-Monroe was the only other heptathlete to throw beyond 15 metres. Her 15.14m toss moved her from outside the top 20 to inside the top 10 overall.

Claudia Salman-Rath's medal hopes took a bit of a dent. The German managed just 12.84m, more than a metre shy of the 14.00m PB she set earlier this year.
