The United States continued their dominance in the women’s 4x100m as Kaylin Whitney anchored their team home with a world-junior-leading 43.46, the eighth-fastest junior time in history and the third quickest in the history of the World Junior Championships.
Teahna Daniels put the US team in the lead after the first exchange, ahead of Jamaica, Germany and Trinidad and Tobago. The host squad relied on their individual sprint finalists Ariana Washington and Jada Martin to give a comfortable lead to Whitney, who secured their country’s ninth world junior title in the event and the sixth consecutive one since 2004.
Whitney completed an excellent week at Hayward Field. The 16-year old high school student won the 100m bronze on Wednesday, followed by the 200m on Friday.
Sasha Forbes, Kedisha Dallas, Saqukine Cameron and Natalliah Whyte brought the baton home to win silver in 43.97, Jamaica’s first medal in a women’s event in Eugene.
The German squad of Lisa Marie Kwayie, Lisa Mayer, Gina Luckenkemper and Chantal Butzek achieved their third consecutive podium finish in the sprint relay with 44.65, ahead of fast-finishing Trinidad and Tobago, fourth in 44.75.
Brazil, bronze medallists in 2012, had problems with the exchanges and did not finish.
