The heptathlon javelin was highlighted by Turkmenistan’s Irina Velihanova and her 44.72m throw in the third round, the longest throw in the two pools and a national junior record, but the significant results began with the second place.

Cuba’s Yorgelis Rodriguez threw 43.36m to earn 732 points, the second-best distance on the day, but back in sixth, Great Britain’s current overall leader Morgan Lake reached a personal best of 41.66m for 699 points.

Rodriguez, who came into the javelin in third overall, needed to close a gap of 171 points on Lake to set up a gold-medal confrontation in the 800m.

Instead, Rodriguez only moved 33 points closer, enough to move ahead of Nadine Visser of the Netherlands and into second place, but not enough to put herself in a position of strength for the 800m.

In order to beat Lake in the seventh event, Rodriguez would need to finish almost 10 seconds faster, an unlikely prospect. The duel, then, barring accidents, will be between Rodriguez and Visser for the silver medal.
