Tokyo Metro announced as WCH Tokyo 25 Principal Supporter

A 20-strong team, featuring global medallists Koki Ikeda and Masatora Kawano, has been named to represent Japan at the World Athletics Race Walking Team Championships Antalya 24 on 21 April.
Both Ikeda and Kawano have been selected for the marathon race walk mixed relay, which involves teams of one male and one female athlete who will complete the marathon distance in four legs of approximately equal distance.
The exact teams are yet to be announced but the six athletes named for the relay are Olympic and world silver medallist Ikeda, two-time world medallist Kawano, multiple national champion Nanako Fujii, world 35km race walk seventh-place finisher Serena Sonoda, Kumiko Okada and Kazuki Takahashi.
Ikeda led Japan to team gold in the men&rsquo;s 20km race walk at the World Race Walking Team Championships in Taicang in 2018, becoming his nation&rsquo;s first 20km winner in the history of the championships. He went on to claim individual and team silver in Muscat in 2022.
This time Japan&rsquo;s men&rsquo;s 20km team features Ryo Hamanishi, Yuta Koga, 2018 World Race Walking Team Championships bronze medallist Satoshi Maruo, world sixth-place finisher Tomohiro Noda and Kento Yoshikawa. The women&rsquo;s 20km team includes Asian Race Walking Championships silver medallist Masumi Fuchise, Yukiko Umeno and Ayane Yanai, who claimed world U20 10,000m race walk bronze in 2022.

Kinki Nippon Tourist announced as WCH Tokyo 25 Principal Supporter

Yuka Ando became the first Japanese winner in three years at the Nagoya Women&rsquo;s Marathon, taking the title in a PB of 2:21:19 at the&nbsp;World Athletics Platinum Label&nbsp;road race on Sunday (10).
Before today, Ando had completed 10 marathons in her career, and had reached the podium in Nagoya on three previous occasions. But today&rsquo;s performance marked the first marathon victory of her career.
After a chilly start with temperatures of about 5C, Ando and fellow Japanese duo Ayuko Suzuki and Rika Kaseda formed aleading pack alongside 2022 world champion Gotytom Gebreslase of Ethiopia and Asian champion Eunice Chebichii Chumba of Bahrain.
The lead group reached the halfway point in 1:09:56, inside 2:20 pace, but the tempo dropped slightly in the second half. Chumba and Gebreslase opened up a bit of a gap on the leading Japanese contenders. Suzuki started to fall back as Ando and Kaseda ran side by side as they tried to chase the leaders.
Gebreslase dropped out at about 36km, leaving Chumba in front. Ando caught up with the leader at about 39km and they ran together for a couple of kilometres before Ando kicked ahead in the final 800 metres.
Ando went on to cross the line in 2:21:18, consolidating her position at eighth on the Japanese all-time list. Chumba finished second in 2:21:25, and Suzuki placed third in a PB of 2:21:33.
Ando, who would have had to have broken the Asian record of 2:18:59 to make it on to Japan&rsquo;s team for the Paris Olympics, was delighted with her run.
&ldquo;There are many people who have helped me to get this far, and I&rsquo;m filled with gratitude,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;I can&rsquo;t go to Paris, but I&rsquo;m really happy that I won. It was really hard when I fell behind the lead pack, but I was able to catch up by running, only focusing on going forward.&rdquo;

The World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25 will start on 13 September 2025, in exactly 555 days to go. The World Athletics Championships is the highest level of athletics competition and followed by more than a billion viewers on television, print and online media.
Around 2,000 athletes from more than 200 countries will take part in the nine-day competition, which will take place at the Japan National Stadium in Tokyo.
The World Athletics Championships is held every two years, but due to a pandemic, the Championships was held in Oregon, USA, in 2022. Thus, after Oregon in 2022 and Budapest in 2023, Tokyo will take over the baton in 2025, bringing one of the world's most important sporting events to Japan.
Two world records were broken at the World Indoor Championships in Glasgow last weekend.
History is also expected to be made at the World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25.

The World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25 will start in 555 days

The Local Organising Committee of the World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25 (LOC) held the primary meeting of the logo design selection committee on 21 February 2024 as the first step in the selection of the logo design for the World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25 (WVH Tokyo 25) to be held in September 2025.
The logo being the symbol of the Championships, the LOC was accepting public submissions for the logo design to encourage people to take part in WCH Tokyo 25.
During the application period from 30 November 2023 to 15 January 2024, 368 logo design entries were received. After excluding works that do not meet the requirements of the entry requirements, the designs were narrowed down to 16 logos in the preliminary selection process. The committee has been tasked with assessing and ranking the selected designs by vote at its meetings.
The logo design selection committee is comprised of seven members: professional designers chairperson Masahiko Kimura, Kaori Akiyama and Henry Ho; track and field athletes Shingo Suetsugu (Japanese record holder in men&rsquo;s 200 metres) and Chisato Fukushima (Japanese record holder in women&rsquo;s 100 metres and 200 metres); and selected members of the public Tadashi Suminaga and Miki Takai.

Chairperson Kimura started the meeting by being the first to share an opening statement. &ldquo;The logo for the WCH Tokyo 25 is not just a mere graphic symbol, but it needs to be compelling enough to pierce the hearts&nbsp; of many people.&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;Rather than being an exclusive group of professional designers, we are a team of individuals with different specialities and life experiences. This diversity will give us a tremendous advantage in choosing a design that will win the hearts of many. The athletes among us will look for designs that will provide encouragement to competing athletes, while the members of the public will consider which logo will resonate with spectators and drum up excitement. By consolidating our different perspectives, experiences and wisdom, we hope to deliver the most remarkable logo ever.&rdquo;

Professional designer Kaori Akiyama then shared her insights, saying, &ldquo;Colour is my speciality. Logos provide spaces with colour. They are also used for athletic wear and goods. As we select the logo, I hope to discuss with all of you what kind of effects logo marks produce.&rdquo;

Shingo Suetsugu used his opening remarks to express his personal aspirations, saying, &ldquo;I hope to contribute to the team by sharing my sensibility as an athlete living in a world where 1/100th of a second makes a big difference. We athletes are often a source of inspiration for other people. I hope we choose a logo that will touch people&rsquo;s hearts.&rdquo;

Chisato Fukushima said: &ldquo;Having participated in the World Athletic Championships myself several times as an athlete, I feel thrilled to be able to take part in the logo selection. Tadashi Suminaga, who was selected from applicants from the general public, was a member of the track and field club at his high school. Having been a spectator and fan of track and field competitions for over 25 years, he smiled broadly as he made his statement. &ldquo;I am a very normal, ordinary person working as a&nbsp;corporate employee, so I feel honoured and grateful to have this opportunity,&rdquo; he explained. &ldquo;I hope we can select a design that will bring back memories of the event at a glance.&rdquo;

Miki Takai, also a member of the public, was a spectator at the World Athletics Championships held in Osaka in 2007. She shared her hopes for the meeting, saying, &ldquo;I&rsquo;m excited to be able to once again experience the thrills and spills of the Championships, this time in Tokyo. I hope to choose a logo that will make both track and field fans and the general public look forward to the event.&rdquo;
Following the opening remarks, the committee members began screening the candidate logos and quickly became engrossed in the task.
The logo will be selected at the secondary selection meeting in March, authorised by World Athletics, confirmed at a board meeting of the local organising committee, and unveiled in May 2024.

On 24 January 2024, World Athletics President Sebastian Coe took time out of his busy schedule during his stay in Tokyo to visit the office of the Local Organising Committee of the World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25 to offer words of encouragement to the committee staff, who are making dedicated efforts to prepare for the event. In addition, the office is located close to the Japan National Stadium, where heated battles of the Championships will take place.
President Coe delivered a message that was both powerful and inspirational. &ldquo;I&rsquo;m pleased to see you all today,&rdquo; he began, continuing: &ldquo;The World Athletics Championships is a tremendously challenging sporting event. Over the next 18 months or so, let us all show consideration and support towards our fellow team members and work to overcome the numerous and inevitable challenges we will face. You are making history now, and will make history again in 2025.<a>&nbsp;</a>So good luck and I have the one last request. Make sure next year's world championships is the best championships ever. With exactly 600 days to go until the World Athletics Championships Tokyo25, on 22 January 2024, World Athletics President Sebastian Coe met with the Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike to express his renewed determination to make the championships a success, together with the President Mitsugi Ogata of the local organising committee (LOC) of the WCH Tokyo25.
Governor Koike, wearing a jacket in 'Edo purple', the official main colour of the WCH Tokyo25, gave a hearty welcome to Coe.
The occasion represented the first meeting between President Coe and the Governor Koike since August last year, when they got together at the WCH in Budapest.

President Coe began by expressing his condolences to those affected by the earthquake on the Noto Peninsula on 1 January, saying, &ldquo;My heart goes out to the people of the region.&rdquo;
With 600 days to go until WCH Tokyo25, he went on to say, &ldquo;We are all looking forward to being here in Tokyo next year to celebrate world championships in a stadium &mdash; on this occasion &mdash; with the spectators.&rdquo; He also expressed his determination, saying, &ldquo;I will continue to treasure the legacy and shared values that have been fostered thus far and hope to be able to look back with satisfaction that a successful and sustainable event has been delivered.&rdquo;
President Coe also shared his aspirations, saying, &ldquo;My hope is to see the stadium bursting with excitement and cheering spectators. For this, I intend to mobilise and draw on the full suite of expertise and experience represented by my team over the coming 600 days,&rdquo; and added, &ldquo;The World Athletics Championships will not only deliver nine days of athletic performances but will also promote values that will endure beyond the event. I&rsquo;m committed to leaving a lasting legacy that will be passed on from generation to generation.&rdquo;
Tokyo Governor Koike said, &ldquo;I&rsquo;d like to showcase and utilise new technologies while giving consideration to women and the environment with the aim of achieving an outstanding event,&rdquo; and shared her strong determination, saying, &ldquo;I definitely want to make WCH Tokyo25 a great success in coordination with the World Athletics and the national government.&rdquo;
President Ogata of the LOC stated, &ldquo;I hope that the unbounded power of track and field athletics will inspire people to dream and hope. I&rsquo;m planning to enable children to participate in the event, and to deliver a new style of the World Athletics Championships and Tokyo-ness.&rdquo;

On the same day as the meeting, President Coe also visited the Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly.
Satoshi Udagawa, President of the Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly, welcomed the President Coe, saying, &ldquo;I hope to enable as many spectators as possible to witness the top-level athletic performances with their own eyes and to provide children with opportunities to be inspired by the values of sports including courage.&rdquo; He also expressed his high expectations for the event, pledging the Assembly&rsquo;s cooperation.
Next, President Coe also met with the various factions of the Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly and called for their cooperation in the WCH Tokyo25.
WCH Tokyo25 will be held from 13 to 21 September 2025.
