Olympic champion and world record-holder Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone set a world lead of 52.70 to win her first 400m hurdles race in almost 22 months at the Edwin Moses Legends Meet, a World Athletics Continental Tour Silver event, in Atlanta on Friday (31).
After focusing on the 400m flat in 2023 and missing the World Championships through injury, the 24-year-old returned to her specialist event for the first time since August 2022 and recorded the ninth fastest time of her career. Her 52.70 is the quickest time in the world so far this year, with world champion Femke Bol set to run her 400m hurdles season opener at the Stockholm Diamond League on Sunday.&nbsp;
&ldquo;It's a progression,&rdquo; McLaughlin-Levrone said in her trackside interview. &ldquo;Shaking the rust off after two years, I&rsquo;ll take a 52.7. Things to work on, we haven&rsquo;t had much hurdle practice, so there&rsquo;s a lot to improve.&rdquo;
In second place, 17-year-old Michelle Smith set a Virgin Islands record of 55.96.
In other hurdles action, Olympic silver medallist Kendra Harrison won a close 100m hurdles race in 12.60 (0.2m/s) ahead of Michelle Atherley (12.63 PB) and Christina Clemons (12.65).
Quanera Hayes held off Kendall Ellis to win the 400m, 50.88 to 51.05, while Christopher Bailey dipped under 45 seconds for the second time in his career, winning the men&rsquo;s race in a PB of 44.42.
Tamara Clark pipped Celera Barnes in the 100m, clocking 11.04 (0.8m/s) to win by 0.04, and Audrey Leduc overpowered Tamari Davis to win the 200m in a Canadian record of 22.36 (1.1m/s) to 22.39. Pjai Austin took the men&rsquo;s 100m in 10.03 (-0.9m/s) ahead of Ronnie Baker with 10.15, while Terrance Laird won the 200m in 20.30 (0.6m/s).
Heather MacLean and Sam Prakel judged their kicks to perfection to win their 1500m races, MacLean clocking 4:02.64 and Prakel 3:35.73.
The 2016 world indoor champion Vashti Cunningham cleared 1.90m to win the high jump.

McLaughlin-Levrone sets world lead on 400m hurdles return in Atlanta

World record-holders Femke Bol, Mondo Duplantis and Mykolas Alekna are aiming to extend their winning streak when the Wanda Diamond League arrives in Stockholm for the Bauhaus Galan on Sunday (2).
Bol, who has been undefeated in the 400m hurdles since August 2022, will be contesting her first race of the year in her specialist event. Already in 2024, though, the Dutch athlete has twice broken her own world indoor 400m record en route to winning the world indoor title in Glasgow.
With 49.17 400m speed in her legs, it will be interesting to see how fast Bol goes on Sunday on a track that holds many fond memories for the Olympic silver medallist. Stockholm is where Bol achieved her first Diamond League win back in 2020, and she returned there in 2021 and smashed through the 53-second barrier for the first time, clocking 52.37. Twelve months later, she went even quicker and won in Stockholm with a Diamond League record of 52.27.
The three women who secured a Jamaican 1-2-3 at the Diamond League meeting in Oslo earlier this week will also be in Stockholm, led by the winner of that race, world bronze medallist Rushell Clayton. She&rsquo;ll be joined by Andrenette Knight and Janieve Russell.
Like Bol, Alison Dos Santos is also undefeated in the 400m hurdles in Stockholm. The 23-year-old from Brazil achieved his first Diamond League win in the Swedish city back in 2021, then he returned there in 2022 to set a meeting record of 46.80.
The 2022 world champion has won both of his races on the Diamond League circuit this year, starting with 46.86 in Doha and more recently clocking 46.63 to defeat world record-holder Karsten Warholm in Oslo.
In Stockholm, world silver medallist Kyron McMaster could be Dos Santos&rsquo;s toughest rival, but also keep an eye out for 2019 world bronze medallist Abderrahman Alsaleck &ndash; part of the event&rsquo;s elite sub-47-second club &ndash; who&rsquo;ll be contesting his first 400m hurdles race of the year.
Many of the fans in Stockholm&rsquo;s Olympic Stadium, however, will be there to see home favourite Mondo Duplantis in action.
The Swedish pole vault superstar has already won a global title and broken a world record within the first five months of the year. He opened his outdoor campaign with a world record of 6.24m in Xiamen, then followed it with 6.00m victories in Suzhou and Ostrava.
At the very least, the world and Olympic champion will want to maintain his winning streak in front of his home crowd. He&rsquo;ll also be keen to vault over six metres again, no doubt, and maybe even take aim at his own meeting record of 6.16m. And if the conditions are good, who knows how high he can go?
Two of the men who joined him on the podium at last year&rsquo;s World Championships &ndash; Ernest John Obiena and Chris Nilsen &ndash; will also be in Stockholm, as will fellow six-metre vaulters KC Lightfoot and Sam Kendricks.
The men&rsquo;s discus is another field full of big hitters, led by a world record-holder who&rsquo;s undefeated this year.
Mykolas Alekna threw 74.35m at the end of April, breaking a discus world record that had stood for 38 years. Although it was a three-metre improvement on his PB, he has backed up that mark with three other competitions beyond 70 metres this year, most recently with a meeting record of 70.91m in Oslo earlier this week.
But on Sunday he&rsquo;ll be up against world and Olympic champion Daniel Stahl, who&rsquo;ll be boosted by the support of the home crowd, as will Olympic silver medallist Simon Petersson. In-form Australian Matt Denny, 2017 world champion Andrius Gudzius, Olympic bronze medallist Lukas Wiesshaidinger and 2019 world silver medallist Fedrick Dacres are also in the loaded line-up.
<h2>Rising stars Haylom and Griffith clash over 1500m</h2>
Young Ethiopian Birke Haylom has started the outdoor season in incredible form, clocking PBs of 3:53.22 for 1500m and 14:23.71 for 5000m. This Sunday she&rsquo;ll contest the shorter of those two events, but will be up against Georgia Griffith, the Australian who won over 3000m in Oslo on Thursday in a world-leading Oceanian record of 8:24.20.
That&rsquo;s not all, though, as Olympic silver medallist Laura Muir, who ran 3:56.35 in Eugene last week, is also in the field, as is Ethiopia&rsquo;s Worknesh Mesele and Australia&rsquo;s Sarah Billings, both of whom have broken four minutes for the distance this year.
The men&rsquo;s 3000m field includes four men who set sub-13-minute national records in the 5000m in Oslo on Thursday: Guatemala&rsquo;s Luis Grijalva, Switzerland&rsquo;s Dominic Lokinyomo Lobalu, Sweden&rsquo;s Andreas Almgren and South Africa&rsquo;s Adriaan Wildschutt.
Each of them will fancy their chances of winning in a race that also includes world 1500m bronze medallist Narve Gilje Nordas, 2017 European indoor champion Adel Mechaal and Oceanian record-holder Stewart McSweyn.
World indoor 1500m champion Geordie Beamish will contest his first steeplechase race of the year. So far in 2014, the 27-year-old from New Zealand has set a PB in every competition he has participated in, indoors and out.
Having only switched to the steeplechase last year, there&rsquo;s likely room for improvement on the 8:13.26 national record he set last summer. And with opponents such as Ethiopian duo Getnet Wale and Samuel Firewu, this Sunday&rsquo;s race should be a good one.
The men&rsquo;s 800m looks similarly competitive. World indoor champion Bryce Hoppel renews his rivalry with world indoor silver medallist Andreas Kramer, but world leader Djamel Sedjati will be tough to beat, as will fellow Algerian Slimane Moula and Botswana&rsquo;s Tshepiso Masalela.
Jake Wightman, the 2022 world champion, is also in the field along with fellow Brits Elliot Giles and Ben Pattison, the world bronze medallist.
<h2>Clash of global gold medallists in high jump</h2>
World high jump champion Yaroslava Mahuchikh will make her outdoor season debut on Sunday and will take on two other women who&rsquo;ve won world titles in recent years.
The Ukrainian started her year in impressive fashion, clearing 2.04m in Cottbus. But she suffered a surprise defeat at the World Indoor Championships, where Australia&rsquo;s Nicola Olyslagers came away with victory. The duo will renew their rivalry this weekend, alongside Olyslagers&rsquo; compatriot Eleanor Patterson, the 2022 world champion.
In the women&rsquo;s shot put, two-time world champion Chase Jackson faces world indoor champion and world leader Sarah Mitton of Canada. Three other women with PBs in excess of 20 metres &ndash; Jessica Schilder, Maggie Ewen and Song Jiayuan &ndash; are also in the line-up.
The women&rsquo;s triple jump, meanwhile, looks set to be a clash between world indoor champion Thea Lafond, two-time world silver medallist Shanieka Ricketts and world indoor silver medallist Leyanis Perez Hernandez.
In Oslo earlier this week, USA&rsquo;s Brittany Brown ended Shericka Jackson&rsquo;s two-year 200m winning streak, and the duo will square off again in Stockholm on Sunday. Earlier in the programme, Brown will contest the 100m, where she&rsquo;ll face Marie Josee Ta Lou-Smith, Gina Bass and Zaynab Dosso.
Japan&rsquo;s Hakim Sani Brown, runner-up in Oslo on Thursday, will take on Cameroon&rsquo;s Emmanuel Eseme in the men&rsquo;s 100m.

Bol, Duplantis and Alekna look to continue winning ways in Stockholm

Amid the drizzle on a grey afternoon in the Netherlands, Haile Gebrselassie&rsquo;s megawatt smile lifted the gloom. The 1994 edition of what was then known as the Adriaan Paulen Memorial Meeting, in honour of the late Dutch Olympian who served as president of the International Amateur Athletic Federation, was drawing to a close.
Only the men&rsquo;s 5000m remained and some bedraggled spectators chose to head for the exit in the predominantly open-air Fanny Blankers-Koen Stadion rather than wait to watch the young Ethiopian who had taken 10,000m gold and 5000m silver at the World Championships in Stuttgart the previous summer.
They were to miss a historic treat: the emergence of Gebrselassie as a world-record-breaking phenomenon. On that dank, dismal day 30 years ago &ndash; 4 June 1994 &ndash; the 1.65m (5ft 5in) East African put the unassuming Dutch town of Hengelo firmly on the global track and field map.
Ten years later, in the 2004 version of what had by then become the FBK Games &ndash; in memory of Blankers-Koen, the Dutch sporting icon who won four Olympic golds in London in 1948 - Gebrselassie&rsquo;s compatriot Kenenisa Bekele set his first world record, also at 5000m.
Over the span of a decade, the global mark for the 12.5 lap event was reduced in Hengelo from 12:56.96 to 12:37.55 by the two diminutive Ethiopian giants of the distance running game.
In between, Gebrselassie further gilded the town&rsquo;s reputation with a pair of world-record-breaking runs at 10,000m, clocking 26:43.53 in 1995 and 26:22.75 in 1998, plus a two-mile world best of 8:01.08 in 1997. The locals took the affable Ethiopian to their hearts, dubbing him &lsquo;Mr Hengelo&rsquo;.
<h2>4 June 1994 &ndash; &ldquo;believe me when I tell you I&rsquo;m ready&rdquo;</h2>
As the runners gathered on the start line for that 5000m in 1994, precious few folk in the FBK Stadion could have suspected that Gebrselassie was about to blaze a trail that would take him to a staggering tally of 27 global marks, at distances ranging from two miles to the marathon.
Smiling and sharing a casual chat with fellow Ethiopian Wurku Bikila, the 21-year-old looked for all the world like he was about to embark on an afternoon stroll.
In actual fact, Gebrselassie had his sights set on 12:58.39, the world record time set by the masterful Moroccan Said Aouita in Rome back in 1987.

&ldquo;The only thing on my mind as I waited for the gun that afternoon was the splits I wanted to hit,&rdquo; he told Jim Denison in The Greatest: The Haile Gebrselassie Story. &ldquo;I knew I could break Aouita&rsquo;s record. My training had been going so well.&rdquo;
His Dutch mentor, Jos Hermens, was not quite so sure.
&ldquo;Jos was cautious,&rdquo; Gebrselassie recalled. &ldquo;&lsquo;I don&rsquo;t know, Haile&rsquo;, he told me. But I said to him, &lsquo;Come on, Jos, believe me when I tell you I&rsquo;m ready.&rdquo;
As it happened, Hermens was in position at the 200m mark on the track, the starting point for the race, ready to play a role that would become so familiar to the man from Nijmegen who in his own clock-chasing career broke the 20,000m world record twice, the world hour record twice &ndash; becoming the first to run 13 miles in 60 minutes &ndash; and a world track best for 10 miles.
Stopwatch in one hand, world record schedule in the other, the bespectacled Hermens shouted out every 400m split as Gebrselassie, running smoothly with his distinctively bouncy stride, overtook the second of his pacemakers and hit 3000m in 7:50.9 &ndash; with Bikila, fourth in the previous year&rsquo;s world 5000m final, still in tow.
&ldquo;Sixty-ones, Haile,&rdquo; Hermens hollered from the infield. &ldquo;You need to keep running 61s.&rdquo;
Bikila started to drop dramatically as Gebrselassie gritted his teeth and dug in. Reeling off closing laps of 61.3, 60.3 and 59.2, the world 10,000m champion finished 1.43 inside Aouita&rsquo;s record, clocking 12:56.96.
Hengelo had its first world record &ndash; in a meeting which at that time bore the name of Paulen, the first man to set a global mark at the Bislett Stadium in Oslo: 63.8 for 500m in 1924.
<h2>31 May 2004 &ndash; &ldquo;and now Kenenisa has his turn&rdquo;</h2>
By the time Kenenisa Bekele lined up for the 5000m at what was then the FBK Games 10 years later &ndash; on 31 May 2004 &ndash; Gebrselassie had lost the world record to Kenyans Moses Kiptanui and Daniel Komen but twice regained it, taking it down to 12:39.36 in Helsinki in 1998.
Like Gebrselassie in Hengelo 10 years prior, Bekele was aged 21 and had won the world 10,000m title the year before. He also had the first three of his five successive world cross-country long-and-short-course doubles behind him.
This time the sun was out, and Hermens had swapped his tracksuit for a suit and tie. The Hengelo world record machine had become a notably slicker operation.

Bekele needed to run 17.6 seconds quicker than his compatriot on the same track a decade previously to replace him in the world record book. In his own beautifully silky style, he tracked the Kenyan pacemaker David Kiplak through 2000m in 5:05.47 and was 25 metres clear of the field as he passed 3000m in 7:37.34 &ndash; 12.5 seconds quicker than Gebrselassie&rsquo;s 1994 split.
Tearing round the last few laps in sprinting mode, clocking 57.85 seconds for the final lap, Bekele crossed the line in 12:37.35 &ndash; 2.01 seconds inside Gebrselassie&rsquo;s world record &ndash; with Tina Turner&rsquo;s Simply The Best blaring over the public address system.
The former world record-holder happened to be watching, having finished runner-up to Sileshie Sihine in the 10,000m. &ldquo;Ten years ago, I first set the 5000m record here and now Kenenisa has his turn,&rdquo; said the magnanimous Gebrselassie. &ldquo;I am so pleased to see such a beautiful runner in Hengelo.&rdquo;
Bekele himself confessed: &ldquo;I was very self-confident today. I felt very strong. At 3000m, I was convinced I would break the record.&rdquo;
Eight days later, Bekele broke Gebrselassie&rsquo;s 10,000m world record, clocking 26:20.31 in Ostrava. A new Ethiopian king of distance running was ruling the global roost.

All new initiatives will be robustly tested and consulted on before any decision is taken to introduce them into mainstream championships. If they don&rsquo;t test well, they will not be introduced.

Hagos Gebrhiwet produced the standout performance of the Bislett Games &ndash; and one of the biggest surprises of the year so far &ndash; when winning the men&rsquo;s 5000m in 12:36.73 at the Wanda Diamond League meeting in Oslo on Thursday (30).
It was one of three meeting records and five world leads set on an enthralling night of athletics action in the Norwegian capital, just two months away from the Paris Olympic Games.
Going into the men&rsquo;s 5000m, many eyes were on world record-holder and Olympic champion Joshua Cheptegei, two-time world cross-country champion Jacob Kiplimo and last year&rsquo;s Bislett Games winner Yomif Kejelcha. But Gebrhiwet &ndash; who produced the first sub-13-minute run of his career on this track as a teenager back in 2012 &ndash; ensured his name won&rsquo;t be forgotten in the lead-up to the Olympics.
The early pace was strong but not spectacular as the field was paced through the first 1000m in 2:33.13 and 2000m in 5:07.05. Addisu Yihune maintained that tempo through 3000m, reached in 7:41.05, with all the big contenders still in contention.

Kejelcha took control soon after and started to wind up the pace. Gebrhiwet stayed close to his fellow Ethiopian with Ugandan duo Kiplimo and Cheptegei close behind as 4000m was reached in 10:11.86, the previous kilometre being covered in 2:30.
Cheptegei was unable to hold on for much longer and started to drift back. Kejelcha continued to drive the pace but the challenge from Gebrhiwet and Kiplimo wasn&rsquo;t fading, despite the increase in pace. Gebrhiwet struck as the bell sounded and moved into the lead, kicking past his compatriot and pulling away with each stride.
With a final lap of 54.99, Gebrhiwet charged through the line in 12:36.73 to win by more than two seconds from Kejelcha (12.38.95) &ndash; the first time in history that two men have broken 12:40 in the same race.
Gebrhiwet&rsquo;s winning time is just 1.37 seconds shy of the world record Cheptegei set in 2020 and moves him to second on the world all-time list, one place ahead of Kenenisa Bekele, whose Ethiopian record Gebrhiwet broke.
Kiplimo held on for third, setting a PB of 12:40.96, while Spain&rsquo;s Thierry Ndikumwenayo (12:48.10) and Yihune (12:49.65) also finished inside 12:50.
It was just the second time in history that 13 men have broken 13 minutes. Along with Gebrhiwet, there were national records for Guatemala&rsquo;s Luis Grijalva (12:50.58), Switzerland&rsquo;s Dominic Lokinyomo Lobalu (12:50.90), Sweden&rsquo;s Andreas Almgren (12:50.94), France&rsquo;s Jimmy Gressier (12:54.97) and South Africa&rsquo;s Adriaan Wildschutt (12:56.67).
&ldquo;I&rsquo;m really happy with my time,&rdquo; said Gebrhiwet, the world road 5km champion. &ldquo;I set a PB when I first ran in Oslo, and now it&rsquo;s even better. The conditions and the crowd were great. It was a very fast race and it wasn&rsquo;t easy for me, but it went very well. I&rsquo;ll now try to qualify for the Olympics in the 10,000m too.&rdquo;

There were notable performances in two other endurance events in Oslo.
Australia&rsquo;s Georgia Griffith continued her breakthrough to win the 3000m in an Oceanian record of 8:24.20. The field had been paced through 1000m in 2:50.34, then that pace was maintained through 2000m in 5:40.73.
The field became more strung out over the final kilometre as the pace increased. Griffith made a break in the closing stages and Ethiopia&rsquo;s Likina Amebaw tried to come back, but her challenge was in vain as the Australian won in a meeting record of 8:24.20, 0.09 ahead of Amebaw in a race where the top six women finished inside 8:30.
In the closing event of the night, Olympic champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen was made to dive for the line to ensure a home victory for the Norwegian fans.
He controlled the pace in the second half, but still had 2019 world champion Timothy Cheruiyot for company on the final lap. The Kenyan challenged the Norwegian down the home straight and appeared to have timed his kick to perfection, but Ingebrigtsen collapsed over the line to get the verdict in a world-leading 3:29.74, 0.03 ahead of Cheruiyot. The first 11 finishers all set either season&rsquo;s or personal bests.

<h2>Dos Santos, Hudson-Smith and Paulino impress over one lap</h2>
The fans in the packed-out stadium had been hopeful for victories from both of their home-grown Olympic champions, but Karsten Warholm suffered a rare defeat in the 400m hurdles.
The world record-holder, who was contesting his first race of the year in his specialist event, still put together an almost perfect race and looked to be on his way to victory as he blasted into an early lead and led through 300m.
But 2022 world champion Alison Dos Santos was close behind and started to gain on the Norwegian down the home straight. Just as the Brazilian was about to draw level, Warholm clipped the final barrier, which was just enough to throw off his rhythm and allow Dos Santos to take the lead.
Dos Santos powered through the line in a world-leading 46.63 &ndash; just 0.11 shy of Warholm&rsquo;s meeting record &ndash; with the world champion finishing a close second in 46.70, still the fifth-fastest time of his career.
&ldquo;It was a tough race, but I wanted to show I am there, I am ready and in good shape, and that I can go even faster,&rdquo; said Dos Santos.

There were record-breaking performances over one lap of the track earlier in the programme, too.
World silver medallist Matt Hudson-Smith charged away from the field in the men&rsquo;s 400m to break his own European record with 44.07. Kirani James, Olympic champion back in 2012, was second in a season&rsquo;s best of 44.58.
In a clash of the podium from last year&rsquo;s World Championships, Marileidy Paulino once again came out on top in the women&rsquo;s 400m.
World silver medallist Natalia Kaczmarek led at the half-way stage, but Paulino kicked hard on the final bend and entered the home straight with a slight lead, forging ahead to win in a world-leading 49.30, just 0.07 shy of the meeting record. Kaczmarek was rewarded with a season&rsquo;s best of 49.80 in second.
Shericka Jackson&rsquo;s two-year winning streak in the 200m came to an end. The two-time world champion finished a distant fifth in 22.97 in a race won by 2019 world silver medallist Brittany Brown (22.32) with Marie-Josee Ta Lou-Smith&nbsp; close second (22.36).
Elsewhere in the sprints, South Africa&rsquo;s Akani Simbine took the men&rsquo;s 100m. Britain&rsquo;s Jeremiah Azu led at half way but then pulled up with what appeared to be a slight injury. Simbine, the Commonwealth champion, powered ahead to win in a season&rsquo;s best of 9.94 from Japan&rsquo;s Hakim Sani Brown (9.99). Olympic champion Marcell Jacobs was third in a season&rsquo;s best of 10.03.
<h2>Alekna breaks father&rsquo;s meeting record</h2>
The men&rsquo;s discus contained the winners of the past five global titles, but it was new world record-holder Mykolas Alekna who came out on top, producing his fourth competition of the year beyond 70 metres and taking down a meeting record that had stood to his father Virgilijus since 2007.
World and Olympic champion Daniel Stahl took an early lead with 66.26m, but Alekna responded in the second round with 70.91m &ndash; a 40-centimetre improvement on the meeting record and a mark that remained the best of the night.

Australia&rsquo;s Matt Denny moved into second place with a third-round throw of 67.61m, and Stahl improved to 66.80m in the same round, but no one could get near to the 21-year-old Lithuanian, who notched up his fifth victory of the year and now turns his attention to defending his European title in Rome at the start of June.
China&rsquo;s Feng Bin produced her fifth successive competition beyond 67 metres to win the women&rsquo;s discus. The 2022 world champion produced a second-round throw of 67.89m to beat multiple world and Olympic champion Sandra Elkasevic (66.48m), both women producing season&rsquo;s bests.
South Africa&rsquo;s Prudence Sekgodiso showed that her recent win in Marrakesh wasn&rsquo;t a fluke as she came out on top once again in the women&rsquo;s 800m. The 22-year-old had a comfortable lead with 200 metres to go; despite a fast finish from Natoya Goule-Toppin, Sekgodiso held on to win in 1:58.66.
Elsewhere on the track, Rushell Clayton led a Jamaican 1-2-3 in the women&rsquo;s 400m hurdles, winning in 54.02 from compatriots Andrenette Knight and Janieve Russell.
USA&rsquo;s KC Lightfoot found that 5.82m was sufficient to win the men&rsquo;s pole vault by 10 centimetres from Emmanaouil Karalis and Ernest John Obiena.
The men&rsquo;s triple jump was a lot closer as world champion Fabrice Hugues Zango won by just two centimetres from Algeria&rsquo;s Yasser Triki, 17.27m to 17.25m.

How to watch and follow the Wanda Diamond League meeting in Oslo

Coaches, athletes and experts will come together on 4 June to discuss the coach-athlete relationship, as part of the Coaching Matters Series virtual forum.
The 2024 series, which is hosted by World Athletics and the Global Athletics Coaching Academy (GACA), launched in March when the focus was on &lsquo;performing under pressure&rsquo;. Recordings of both forum sessions &ndash; one that took place for the Western time zone and another for the Eastern time zone &ndash; are available to watch back via the <a href="https://elearning.worldathletics.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">World Athletics e-learning platform</a>.
Now attention turns to the topic of &lsquo;having the difficult conversation&rsquo; and again two sessions will take place &ndash; one at 9am CET and the other at 6pm CET on Tuesday 4 June.
The coach-athlete relationship is unique but like any other relationship, it has to be worked at and there will be bumps along the journey. When the bumps occur, how do we tackle them? This forum welcomes speakers who will, through their experience and knowledge, discuss how we can successfully approach and resolve difficult conversations.

French 110m hurdles specialist Sasha Zhoya has big ambitions ahead of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.&nbsp;
After becoming the 2021 world U20 champion and finishing sixth at the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, the rising star tells <a href="https://worldathletics.org/videos/playlist/latest-videos/664ee7387b2478b166078b0d" target="_blank" rel="noopener">World Athletics Inside Track</a> how his determination and motivation will see him through this Olympic year and beyond, as he eyes the world record.

&ldquo;Before the race, I&rsquo;m only telling myself one thing &ndash; that I&rsquo;m the most dominant and I&rsquo;m going to win this race,&rdquo; says the 21-year-old, who has a <a href="https://worldathletics.org/news/feature/sasha-zhoya-110m-hurdles-world-u20-nairobi" target="_blank" rel="noopener">background in ballet and music</a>.
&ldquo;I motivate myself, I almost lie to myself, and tell myself that I&rsquo;m the best.&rdquo;
After setting a world U20 record of 12.72 over the U20 height hurdles when winning his global age group title in Nairobi three years ago, Zhoya now has his sights on another time target.
&ldquo;I think Aries Merritt&rsquo;s record (the senior world 110m hurdles record of 12.80) is on the verge of getting broken,&rdquo; he says. &ldquo;You&rsquo;ve got Grant (Holloway) who ran 12.81, Devon Allen ran 12.84, so it shows that the guys are capable of running close to that time. Myself, I feel like because in the junior hurdles I ran a 12.72, it&rsquo;s possible to go under 12.80. Who is going to be the first person to do it? That&rsquo;s up for grabs but I&rsquo;m no longer visioning to do 12.80, I&rsquo;m visioning to go under that.
&ldquo;Now that I&rsquo;m on the world stage and especially that now that I&rsquo;m not No.1, as I was in the juniors, there&rsquo;s more hunger in me to get up to that level that I was before.&nbsp;

It might have been a blustery evening in Ostrava but that didn&rsquo;t seem to matter to Mondo Duplantis and Molly Caudery, who remained resolute to win their pole vault contests during the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meeting on Tuesday (28).
Duplantis secured a six-metre clearance before three attempts at another world record, while Caudery achieved a meeting record and the highest women&rsquo;s outdoor vault in the world so far this year to triumph at the Ostrava Golden Spike in Czechia.
There were some thrilling battles on the track, too, with Andre De Grasse getting a sprint double, Steven Gardiner extending his win streak, Ciara Mageean digging deep and Djamel Sedjati storming to an unchallenged world lead.
But in the men&rsquo;s pole vault, Olympic and world champion Duplantis had the contest won after just two jumps, as he cleared 5.62m and 5.82m on his first attempts.
It took him all three tries to get over 6.00m but that didn&rsquo;t deter the 24-year-old, who then asked for the bar to be raised to 6.25m &ndash; a single centimetre higher than the world record he set on his season opener in Xiamen on 20 April.
While his third try at 6.25m &ndash; which would have been the ninth world record of his career so far &ndash; was close, it wasn&rsquo;t to be and Duplantis walked away, ready to try again on home soil in Stockholm on Sunday.
The next five athletes all cleared 5.62m, topped by Ethan Cormont of France on countback.
"Of course, it was a bit more difficult for all of us in the field because of the weather. The pole vault is a very sensitive event when it is cold and windy," said Duplantis. "But I just tried to jump the best I could. I was very surprised with my third attempt on 6.25m. I knew that it would take the best jump of my life to get this and it was actually really a good one. This gives me big confidence going forward and to the next competitions."
World indoor champion Caudery also dominated the women&rsquo;s contest, as she cleared 4.84m on her third try to add a centimetre to the meeting record set by Stacy Dragila in 2004 and achieve a mark that only she has surpassed so far this year, with her indoor clearances of 4.86m and 4.85m.
She then had two unsuccessful attempts at a would-have-been national record of 4.92m. Caudery won by 20cm, as 2016 Olympic champion Katerina Stefanidi secured the runner-up spot with a second time clearance at 4.64m.

The men&rsquo;s javelin closed the programme and that was won by Germany&rsquo;s Julian Weber to deny home favourite Jakub Vadlejch. Weber&rsquo;s best of 87.26m came in the second round and that was more than a metre farther than Vadlejch, the Olympic and world medallist, could manage as he settled for second with 86.08m from his first throw.
World champion Haruka Kitaguchi won a much closer women&rsquo;s competition as she threw 60.47m to also deny a home win, Petra Sicakova finishing second with 60.42m.
Italy&rsquo;s Leonardo Fabbri, who threw 22.95m in Savona recently, got another 22 metre-plus performance to take the win in the shot put. He might have only surpassed that barrier once in the competition but it was enough, as he threw 22.40m in the second round, putting him ahead of Jordan Geist, who went beyond 22 metres for the first time with 22.09m in the final round.
In other field event action, Poland&rsquo;s Norbert Kobielski and USA&rsquo;s Shelby McEwen shared the high jump win as they both cleared 2.24m.
<h2>Sprint double for De Grasse</h2>
Canada&rsquo;s De Grasse is a multiple global medallist in both the 100m and 200m and he won both of those events in Ostrava. First, the Olympic 200m champion took on his fellow Olympic gold medallist Marcell Jacobs, who won the 100m in Tokyo, in the shorter event and beat the Italian, 10.10 to 10.19 (0.0m/s). Splitting the pair was Ryiem Forde, who ran 10.17 for second place.
De Grasse returned to the track 80 minutes later for his specialist event and he won that too, clocking 20.09 (0.4m/s) to triumph clear ahead of Andrew Hudson who ran 20.56.
Poland&rsquo;s world indoor 60m silver medallist Ewa Swoboda also made a statement in the women&rsquo;s 100m, winning on her individual season debut in 11.05 (0.7m/s) ahead of Gina Mariam Bass Bittaye (11.14).
Olympic champion Gardiner maintained his unbeaten run in the 400m, but the race came down to a thrilling finish. The Bahamian 28-year-old, who also claimed the world title in 2019, went out hard and looked ready to cruise to victory. But as he began to tire, world indoor champion Alexander Doom launched his attack, and the Belgian finished just 0.05 back &ndash; 44.39 to 44.44. It was a season&rsquo;s best for Gardiner and he led Doom to a PB that missed the Belgian record by just 0.01.

There was also a big PB by the runner up in the women&rsquo;s 400m. Poland&rsquo;s world silver medallist Natalia Kaczmarek was well in control as she strode to a season&rsquo;s best of 50.09 to win but chasing her over the line was Czechia&rsquo;s 18-year-old Lurdes Gloria Manuel, who took more than half a second off her own national U20 record with 50.59.
Switzerland&rsquo;s Ditaji Kambundji narrowly denied another win for Poland in the 100m hurdles, crossing the line in 12.68 (-0.6m/s) to pip world indoor bronze medallist Pia Skrzyszowska by just 0.03.
Cathelijn Peeters, a member of the world 4x400m title-winning Dutch teams in Budapest and Glasgow, set a PB of 54.31 to triumph in the 400m hurdles, while the men&rsquo;s event was won by Italy&rsquo;s Alessandro Sibilio in 48.25.
A world lead was set in the men&rsquo;s 800m and Algeria&rsquo;s Sedjati did it in style. Surging off the final bend, he clearly had the win well secured but that wasn&rsquo;t enough for the 2022 world silver medallist and he only seemed to push harder the closer he got to the line. Sprinting away, he stormed over the finish in 1:43.51 for the fastest time in the world so far this season, winning by more than two seconds ahead of France&rsquo;s Gabriel Tual (1:45.79).
While Sedjati&rsquo;s win never seemed in doubt, Mageean fought back for hers in the 1500m. The world fourth-place finisher was back in seventh as they reached the final bend but timing her kick to perfection, she passed her rivals down the home straight and eventually pipped Sarah Healy to lead an Irish one-two, 4:01.98 to 4:02.12.
The men&rsquo;s 1500m closed the track action and there Italy&rsquo;s Federico Riva clinched the win in a PB of 3:33.53, just ahead of Raphael Pallitsch who set an Austrian record of 3:33.59. A series of other PBs followed, including 3:34.32 by Ireland&rsquo;s Luke McCann in third.

Wanda Diamond League action returns to the Norwegian capital of Oslo on Thursday (30), when a host of global champions and world record-holders will battle at the Bislett Games.
Home stars Karsten Warholm and Jakob Ingebrigtsen contest two of the many top-class match ups, while Shericka Jackson heads the 200m line up, Joshua Cheptegei stars in a strong 5000m field, Prudence Sekgodiso has the chance to make another statement in the 800m and&nbsp;Mykolas Alekna forms part of another impressive discus clash.
Norway&rsquo;s Warholm set the first of his two world 400m hurdles records in Oslo, clocking 46.70 in 2021. He went even faster one month later, improving the record to 45.94 to win the Olympic title in Tokyo.
It was also in 2021 that Warholm claimed the second of his two Diamond Trophies and now, as he works towards his Olympic title defence, the Bislett Games is where he kicks off his 2024 Diamond League campaign. After an indoor season that featured just the World Indoor Championships in Glasgow, where he secured 400m silver, Warholm opened his outdoor season in Bergen last week. Running 33.28 for the 300m hurdles, he missed his own world best from 2021 by just 0.02.
In Oslo, the three-time world champion contests the 400m hurdles for the first time since finishing second in the Diamond League final in Eugene in September. He&rsquo;s got some fierce competition as he faces Brazil&rsquo;s Alison dos Santos, the world and Diamond League champion in 2022, who opened his own 400m hurdles season with a 46.86 win in Doha. Looking to challenge them both will be world silver medallist Kyron McMaster.
While Warholm races in the Diamond League for the first time this year, his compatriot Ingebrigtsen started his season by finishing second in a thrilling mile in Eugene and will now look to go one better in the 1500m on home soil. The Olympic champion, who won both the 1500m and 5000m Diamond League titles last year, this time goes up against the likes of his compatriot Narve Gilje Nordas, the world bronze medallist last year, plus 2019 world champion Timothy Cheruiyot, Azeddine Habz and Stewart McSweyn, as Ingebrigtsen returns to a meeting at which he ran 3:27.95 last year.
The men&rsquo;s 5000m is also highly competitive as Uganda&rsquo;s Cheptegei, the world record-holder and Olympic champion, goes up against his compatriots Jacob Kiplimo and Oscar Chelimo, plus Olympic and world medallist Hagos Gebrhiwet and his Ethiopian compatriots Yomif Kejelcha, Samuel Tefera and Biniam Mehary, Switzerland&rsquo;s Dominic Lokinyomo Lobalu and Spain&rsquo;s Thierry Ndikumwenayo.
In the women&rsquo;s 800m, South Africa&rsquo;s Sekgodiso has the chance to double her number of Diamond League meeting wins, following her breakthrough victory in Marrakech. There she ran a PB of 1:57.26 to beat Habitam Alemu and Noelie Yarigo, and Yarigo is also in action in Oslo, as is world indoor champion Tsige Duguma, who was second in Los Angeles in a PB of 1:57.56. Jess Hull, who ran 8:37.18 to win in Sydney in March, races the 3000m against Caroline Nyaga and Karoline Bjerkeli Grovdal.
<h2>Jackson and Jacobs in sprints, Alekna heads discus clash</h2>
Jamaica&rsquo;s world champion Jackson got her season off to a winning start with a 200m victory in Marrakech in 22.82 to maintain a winning streak of 16 finals that dates back to June 2022. Having won Diamond Trophies in both the 100m and 200m last year, she&rsquo;ll look to build on that opener in Oslo, where she will face USA&rsquo;s Jenna Prandini, Anavia Battle and Brittany Brown, plus Marie-Josee Ta Lou-Smith and Daryll Neita, who won the 200m in Suzhou and 100m in Doha.
In the men&rsquo;s 100m, Italy&rsquo;s Olympic champion Marcell Jacobs will clash with Akani Simbine, who won in Suzhou, plus Marrakech winner Emmanuel Eseme and Abdul Hakim Sani Brown. Brandon Hicklin and Jeremiah Azu, who have both run sub-10.00 PBs this season, join them in the line up.
Dominican Republic&rsquo;s world champion Marileidy Paulino will race against world bronze medallist Sada Williams and world indoor silver medallist Lieke Klaver in the 400m, while the men&rsquo;s event features Grenada&rsquo;s multiple Olympic and world medallist Kirani James, world silver medallist Matthew Hudson-Smith and home favourite Havard Bentdal Ingvaldsen. Jamaica&rsquo;s world bronze medallist Rushell Clayton leads the entries for the women&rsquo;s 400m hurdles.
After setting a world record of 74.35m in Ramona in April, Mykolas Alekna won the discus clash in Marrakech, surpassing 70 metres again with a 70.70m throw to beat Australian record-holder Matthew Denny and Sweden&rsquo;s Olympic and world champion Daniel Stahl.
That trio clash again in Oslo as part of a stacked field &ndash; one which also includes 2022 world gold medallist Kristjan Ceh, Andrius Gudzius, Fedrick Dacres and Lukas Weisshaidinger. The women&rsquo;s discus competition gets the Diamond League action under way in Oslo and that contest will see 2022 world champion Feng Bin go up against world fourth-place finisher Jorinde van Klinken. Both have clinched third-place finishes in the Diamond League so far this season, Feng in Xiamen and Van Klinken in Eugene.
The top two from the World Championships in Budapest clash in the men&rsquo;s triple jump as Hugues Fabrice Zango goes up against Lazaro Martinez. In the men&rsquo;s pole vault, USA&rsquo;s Olympic and world medallist Chris Nilsen, KC Lightfoot and two-time world champion Sam Kendricks take on Ernest John Obiena and home star Simen Guttormsen.

Warholm, Jackson and Ingebrigtsen among stars on show in Oslo

The three individual men&rsquo;s Olympic sprint champions are set to compete at the Golden Spike &ndash; a World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meeting &ndash; in Ostrava on Tuesday (28).
Italy&rsquo;s Marcell Jacobs and Canada&rsquo;s Andre De Grasse, the Olympic gold medallists over 100m and 200m respectively, will clash over the shorter distance, then De Grasse will double up by contesting his specialist event. Olympic 400m champion Steven Gardiner, meanwhile, will take on world indoor champion Alexander Doom over one lap of the track.
The field event action will be similarly gripping with world and Olympic pole vault champion Mondo Duplantis headlining the pole vault, just five weeks after increasing his own world record to 6.24m in Xiamen. World champion Haruka Kitaguchi and multiple global medallist Jakub Vadlejch will feature in the javelin contests.

Jacobs has had just two individual outings this year, the latest being a 10.07 season&rsquo;s best to win in Rome last weekend. That makes the Italian the fastest of the Ostrava field this year on season&rsquo;s bests, though he&rsquo;s also one of four men in the line-up with a sub-10-second PB.
De Grasse, meanwhile, has a best this year of 10.11 and recently finished second at the Diamond League meeting in Marrakesh. Britain&rsquo;s Reece Prescod, who set his PB of 9.93 in Ostrava when winning in the Czech city two years ago, will be one to watch, as will Jamaica&rsquo;s Ryiem Forde.
Later in the evening, De Grasse will take on Jamaica&rsquo;s Andrew Hudson and Britain's Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake in the 200m.
Not including the few races where he has pulled up injured, Gardiner has been undefeated over 400m since the 2017 World Championships. But the Bahamian, who has a season&rsquo;s best of 44.45, could be pushed by Belgium&rsquo;s Doom, who won in Marrakesh last week with a lifetime best of 44.51.
The women&rsquo;s sprints should be similarly competitive. Poland&rsquo;s Ewa Swoboda and Italy&rsquo;s Zainab Dosso, who took silver and bronze respectively over 60m at the World Indoor Championships, will clash outdoors for the first time this year. Swoboda will be contesting her first individual race of the outdoor season, while Dosso is fresh from reducing the Italian 100m record to 11.02 in Savona.
Switzerland&rsquo;s European 200m champion Mujinga Kambundji and double African Games sprint champion Gina Bass are also in the line-up.
In the women&rsquo;s 100m hurdles, European champion Pia Skrzyszowska takes on European leader Ditaji Kambundji, while world silver medallist Natalia Kaczmarek is the strong favourite in the women's 400m.
<h2>Duplantis returns</h2>
One year after setting a meeting record of 6.12m, pole vault superstar Mondo Duplantis returns to Ostrava&rsquo;s Golden Spike to try to improve on that mark.
The Swede is undefeated so far this year, winning all four of his indoor competitions &ndash; including taking gold at the World Indoor Championships &ndash; and then setting a world record of 6.24m on his outdoor season opened in Xiamen in April. One week later, he won in Suzhou with 6.00m.
Ernest John Obiena, who finished second to Duplantis at last year&rsquo;s World Championships, will also be in Ostrava.
The javelin is always one of the most popular and competitive events at the Golden Spike, and this year&rsquo;s edition is set to continue that tradition.
In the men&rsquo;s contest, home favourite Jakub Vadlejch will take on European champion Julian Weber and two-time world champion Anderson Peters. Four-time global medallist Vadlejch recently won in Doha with 88.38m, which puts him just one centimetre ahead of Weber on this year&rsquo;s world list. Peters is close behind with a best of 86.62m.
In the women&rsquo;s event, world champion Haruka Kitaguchi of Japan faces two-time world U20 champion Adriana Vilagos. Both women are undefeated this year and head to Ostrava with similar season&rsquo;s bests. Kitaguchi threw 63.45m last weekend to win in Tokyo, while Vilagos set a PB of 63.58m earlier this month in Offenburg.
Italy&rsquo;s Leonardo Fabbri will look to continue his sensational form in the shot put. The world silver medallist has this month racked up throws of 22.95m in Savona, 22.91m in Asti and 22.88m in Modena. His toughest opponent in Ostrava could be New Zealand&rsquo;s two-time world indoor champion Tom Walsh.
In other field event action, world indoor champion Molly Caudery takes on Slovenia&rsquo;s Tina Sutej and Katerina Stefanidi of Greece in the women&rsquo;s pole vault.
Elsewhere on the track, meanwhile, Djamel Sedjati and Ben Pattison, the world silver and bronze medallists, will clash over 800m. And in the women&rsquo;s 1500m, Ethiopian trio Tigist Girma, Netsanet Desta, Axumawit Embaye take on Ireland&rsquo;s Ciara Mageean.

Global sprint champions set to clash in Ostrava

In a race that was set up as a 10,000m world record attempt, the competitor who initially had no intention of challenging the record became the one ultimately to smash it.&nbsp;
The record now belongs to <a href="https://worldathletics.org/athletes/kenya/beatrice-chebet-14749924" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Beatrice Chebet</a> of Kenya, who ran 28:54.14* to become the first woman under 29 minutes on the track. That performance, achieved on Saturday (25) at the Prefontaine Classic, is seven seconds faster than the previous world record of 29:01.03 that Letesenbet Gidey established in 2021. The race opened the Wanda Diamond League meeting with an immediate roar from the Hayward Field crowd.
Ethiopia&rsquo;s Gudaf Tsegay became the third-fastest all-time performer with her runner-up finish of 29:05.92, as four women ran faster than 30 minutes. The race also doubled as the selection race for Athletics Kenya&rsquo;s Paris Olympic team, and Chebet and Lilian Kasait Rengeruk (29:26.89) qualified.
In a race that took place before the Diamond League programme, Tsegay and Chebet stayed within a stride of the lights marking world record pace as they passed halfway in 14:31, until Chebet sped ahead with three laps remaining, the lead all her own, and with it the weight of a world record attempt.&nbsp;
Her move was motivated by seeing world 5000m record-holder Tsegay &ndash; who had initially requested a world record pace, only to decide against it because of discomfort in a foot, and change her mind again in recent days after feeling better &ndash; begin to fall behind the pace lights. Chebet said she entered the meeting to qualify for Paris, where she plans to contest both the 5000m and 10,000m, but her intent was not the record.
&ldquo;When Gudaf asked for a world record, I decided to say: &lsquo;Let me try to go for that to see how the body is.&rsquo; Because my body was not bad,&rdquo; said Chebet, the two-time world cross country champion who also claimed world 5km gold last year. &ldquo;I was comfortable to run a world record so when I saw Gudaf drop a bit, I said: &lsquo;Let me try to push it to see how it can go.&rsquo; When I got to the last two laps, I just got motivated and said, I&rsquo;m on a world record pace, so let me push the last 400m.&rdquo;
With 800m to go, Chebet pulled ahead of the pace lights by two whole strides as fans inside Hayward Field began standing in their seats.
After the finish, Chebet fell to the track, splayed out in exhaustion, as Tsegay finished and joined her on the track. When the women stood, they hugged as the new world record flashed on the scoreboard behind them. Chebet later returned to the track wearing a &lsquo;Stop Pre&rsquo; T-shirt, the same design that Steve Prefontaine wore at Hayward Field more than 50 years earlier.
After only her second ever 10,000m race, Chebet adds this world record to the world 5km record of 14:13 she set in Barcelona in December.
&ldquo;I knew a woman could run under 29, I&rsquo;ve known for a long time,&rdquo; said Sifan Hassan, who entered the meeting as No.2 all-time, and now ranks fourth. Hassan believes women &ldquo;can run 28:45&rdquo; in the future.
Four men sprinted within a step of one another toward the finish of Athletics Kenya&rsquo;s men&rsquo;s 10,000m trials, with Daniel Mateiko winning in 26:50.81 after a 56-second final lap to edge Nicholas Kipkorir, who ran a personal best of 26:50.94.&nbsp;
<h2>Kerr claims mile crown</h2>
In perhaps the most anticipated race, world 1500m champion Josh Kerr outduelled Olympic champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen to win the Bowerman Mile in a British record of 3:45.34, breaking Steve Cram&rsquo;s 1985 record.&nbsp;

After the pacer came through halfway in 1:53, Kerr moved up to the front with 600m remaining and the favourites aligned at the front, with Ingebrigtsen and Yared Nuguse behind, and 2022 world champion Jake Wightman tracking Nuguse closely in fourth. That order was unchanged with half a lap remaining and no one could make up ground on Kerr, who ripped his sunglasses off after finishing before collecting himself and shaking the hand of Ingebrigtsen. The two had bantered through the press for months about their standing atop the 1500m.&nbsp;
&ldquo;I felt very strong through the first (kilometre) and I was like, you know what, it&rsquo;s time to press and push and see what these guys have got,&rdquo; Kerr said.&nbsp;
Ingebrigtsen was coming off an achilles tendon injury during the winter and opened his season in 3:45.60, with the US record-holder Nuguse third in 3:46.22. Ingebrigtsen said that although he was coming off missing time due to injury, he considered the race an improvement on last year at this time.
&ldquo;I tried to fight him,&rdquo; Ingebrigtsen said of Kerr, &ldquo;but today for me was more of a time trial. Of course, we&rsquo;re racing, but it&rsquo;s definitely some differences in terms of approach into this race because this, for some people, this is their final test, even before the Olympics in Paris. But this is not my final test. I think if anything, this is going to be an exciting summer. For myself, I think it&rsquo;s very good.&rdquo;
Even with Olympic and world champion Ryan Crouser a late withdrawal, the men&rsquo;s shot put was won by one of history's farthest marks. Joe Kovacs threw 23.13m, which stands as the seventh best winning mark of all time and as the second best throw of Kovacs&rsquo; career. In recent weeks while training at the sector Kovacs is building at his home, he has thrown well beyond Saturday&rsquo;s mark, so far that it &ldquo;hits the mulch&rdquo; in his backyard, he said. On Saturday, his winning throw pushed the limits of the stadium sector.
&ldquo;If I did a mulch throw here, I think I would be doing some landscaping at Hayward,&rdquo; Kovacs added.&nbsp;
Kovacs said he would have preferred to compete against Crouser to measure up to the world record-holder, and Leonardo Fabbri, the year&rsquo;s previous world leader, but said he understood that national trials were only three weeks away. It wasn&rsquo;t the only big throw, with Canada&rsquo;s Camryn Rogers breaking the meeting record while winning the hammer with 77.23m on her fifth attempt. DeAnna Price was second with 76.74m.&nbsp;

<h2>Hodgkinson takes top spot</h2>
In an 800m field that could be a Paris preview, Keely Hodgkinson made her move to the front with 150m remaining, passed world champion Mary Moraa and gained a step by the top of the final backstretch. That gap widened from there, with Hodgkinson winning in 1:55.78, breaking the tape with a slash of her hand. Moraa was second in 1:56.71, and Jemma Reekie and Nia Akins close behind.
Afterward, Hodgkinson revealed that during November training she had injured a ligament, tendon and hamstring at the back of her knee in what she called a &ldquo;freak accident&rdquo; while spraining her ankle. The injury sidelined her for the indoor season.
Tsigie Gebreselama took eight seconds off of Tsegay&rsquo;s previous world leading time to win the 5000m in 14:18.76, a personal best. Ethiopian women finished in the top six places, with Ejgayehu Taye second in 14:18.92 after a fierce fight for the line.
Hassan was seventh, in 14:34.38. There were no lingering effects from running the Tokyo Marathon, Hassan said. Instead, she said she was coming off of several hard weeks of training in the US at altitude. Now that her range has extended to the marathon, Hassan &ndash; who has earned gold at global championships from the 1500m to the 10,000m &ndash; said she would likely decide what event, or events, to focus on in Paris in July.
Another world lead was set in the 3000m steeplechase after Peruth Chemutai broke the Ugandan record in 8:55.09, which took three tenths of a second off of the previous world lead held by Beatrice Chepkoech, Saturday&rsquo;s runner-up in 8:56.51. They were the only women under nine minutes.
<h2>Sprint showdowns</h2>
Sha&rsquo;Carri Richardson and Elaine Thompson-Herah lined up next to one another at the start of the 100m, but Richardson quickly made their showdown moot. Only Julien Alfred could stay within a step of the world champion, whose 10.83 was off the world lead of 10.77 but well ahead of the field. Alfred was second in 10.93, as one of three women &ndash; including Dina Asher-Smith &ndash; under 11 seconds. Thompson-Herah, the five-time Olympic champion, opened her season in ninth, in 11.30. Richardson said she was nervous &ldquo;but I used that nervousness as my motivation.&rdquo;&nbsp;
Christian Coleman held off Ferdinand Omanyala to win the men&rsquo;s 100m, 9.95 to 9.98.&nbsp;
Gerald Drummond won the 400m hurdles in 48.56 out of the eighth lane, pulling ahead in the final 50m after Roshawn Clarke faded from first to fourth. Rai Benjamin, the world leader, had initially been entered, only to withdraw after feeling slight discomfort coming off his world-leading victory the week prior in Los Angeles.
Three women were within three-hundredths of a second at the finish of the 100m hurdles before Cyrena Samba-Mayela won in 12.52, tying her own French record. She was just ahead of Jasmine Camacho-Quinn, in 12.54.

Grant Holloway led the 110m hurdles by the third barrier and widened the gap by a whole stride at midway en route to the season&rsquo;s fastest time of 13.03 &ndash; an improvement on the 13.07 he ran last week in Atlanta. Holloway extended his winning streak to 11 consecutive races in 2024. Only a late push by Daniel Roberts, second in 13.13, narrowed Holloway&rsquo;s margin of victory only slightly over a strong field that included five who made the final of last year&rsquo;s World Championships. Hansle Parchment, the Budapest silver medallist, was fourth in 13.28.
Diribe Welteji ran away with the 1500m victory in a personal best of 3:53.75, pulling Australia&rsquo;s Jessica Hull to an area record 3:55.97 in the process, with Elle St. Pierre right behind in 3:56.00, a PB by two seconds. Hull had made breaking the Australian record her goal at the last Prefontaine Classic, in September, and felt it was possible after becoming very comfortable running 62-second laps during training, she said.&nbsp;
Wearing what has become his trademark headband, one that on Saturday read &ldquo;conqueror,&rdquo; Kenny Bednarek led the 200m coming off the curve and won in 19.89, ahead of Courtney Lindsey&rsquo;s 20.09.&nbsp;
World silver medallist Valarie Allman led the discus from her first attempt but required a final throw of 67.36m to stay ahead of Yaime Perez, whose own final throw came close at 67.25m. Since winning the Tokyo Olympics, Allman said she had been searching for the past three years to recapture the rhythm that had led to her gold medal.&nbsp;
Emily Grove won the pole vault at 4.63m, beating Robeilys Peinado and Olympic and world champion Katie Moon, who each cleared 4.53m. At the pre-meeting press conference, Moon acknowledged that training has been interrupted since the winter because of trouble with her achilles&rsquo; tendon.&nbsp;
The triple jump world leader, Thea LaFond, finished second by nine centimetres, when her last attempt could not eclipse the first by winner Leyanis Hernandez Perez of 14.73m (2.1m/s).
