1999 best mark for Thanou in Kalamata

Katerina Thanou, recorded the best performance so far this year with a  10.91 (+1.6m/sec) clocking at the international meeting in Kalamata on Saturday. Thanou, world champion in 60m at Maebashi, was slow out of the blocks, but after the first 20m powered away to the finish line.

In Kalamata Niki Xanthou and Paraskevi Tsiamita also became early season leaders in their events  with 6.98 (long jump) and 14.67 (triple jump) national record. The competition also saw javelin bronze medalist at World Championships Athens'97, Kostas Gatsioudis, improve with 86.94 and a year's best in the 800m of 1:59.19 by Gorelova of Russia.

Other results: Samuel Matete ran 48.43 in the 400m.hurdles, In the men's 100m, Alexis Alexopoulos took first place with 10.25 ahead of Darren Campbell, Dragutin Topic won the men's high jump (2.25), while Yelena Gyliaeva won the women's event with 1.97 ahead of Niki Bakogianni 1.95, Tatyana Kotova was second in the   long jump with 6.89 and Heike Drechsler third (6.66). Roman Schurenko won the men's long jump (8.11) and Daniel Jahic was second (8.10).

Sarka Kasparkova had a problem with a hamstring and retired from the triple jump competition.
