26 May 1999During its session in Sevilla on 19-20 May, the IAAF Council gave its approval for the provisional incorporation of the Kiribati Athletics Association, founded in 1998, as the 210th Member Federation of the International Amateur Athletic Federation.
Full membership of Kiribati must be approved by the IAAF Congress, which will meet in Sevilla on 18-19 August, on the eve of the 7th IAAF World Championships in Athletics – Sevilla 99.
The island of Kiribati is situated within the Oceania continental area, just south of the Marshall Islands and neighbouring the Island of Nauru. The Federation will have the three-letter designation KIR.
