American Chris Huffins in the lead after day one in Desenzano
Ottavio Castellini for the IAAF

Desenzano del Garda (ITA) - Chris Huffins is certainly thinking back with disappointment to his first day of competition in this 12th edition of the International "Multistars" Combined Events Meeting in Desenzano, which is part of the 1999 IAAF Combined Events Challenge.
The American has probably missed a chance to accomplish a world class performance because of a poor result in the long jump contest, an event in which he usually excels.
7.29m is far beyond the possibilities of Huffins whose personal best is over the 8m distance. It is even more disappointing that he had previously ran an excellent 10.40 in the 100m which would have led him to the 8500 points he is seeking.
Unfortunately, his first jump was foul, so he had to produce a "jump of security" and landed at 7.29m before fouling his last attempt.
He then tried to grasp some points in the high jump by attempting 2.12m but did not succeed.
Statistically, Huffins is still in the run for a score over 8400 points

After one day of competition, the women’s field is led by blond and attractive South African Maralize Visser who is 54 points ahead of her National Record. Following statisticians previsions, Italian Gertrud Bacher is also fighting to establish a new National Record being some tens points ahead of the mark of 6135 points.
Belarussia’s Atroshchenko who should be able to conclude these two days of competition with some 6200 points tomorrow, is nevertheless candidate number one to victory. She is now fourth behind Visser, USA’s Lott and Italian Bacher.
