Ana Quirot expects a
child to miss Seville 99
Ana Fidelia Quirot, 35, reigning World 800m champion is pregnant and could therefore
decide to put an end to her athletics career before the 7th IAAF World
Championships in Athletics in Seville, 20-29 August 1999.
In 1993 the Cuban dramatically lost the baby she was carrying, following a fire in the
kitchen of her home. Quirot who was very badly burnt, was between life and death for some
days and underwent numerous operations, which did not erase the scars on her body. She
came back to competition 2 years later and won her first world title in Göteborg in 1995
before gaining the world crown again in Athens 97. Recently, Ana Quirot had
announced her intentions to reduce her athletics activities in order to dedicate a little
bit more of her time to the creation of a family.
